  1. EMpower Environmental Masters Programme Of Work Experience through Research

  2. EMpower What is EMpower? Scheme to give Environmental and Earth Science MSc students exposure to the Nuclear Sector through research project placements, visiting lecturers, networking events The Pilot year 2008 brought together students, academics and the Nuclear Industry through research projects and a high-profile Lecture Day

  3. EMpower Why was it set up? In response to an acknowledged skills shortage following Government report (2002) Proposed that environmental masters courses could represent a hitherto untapped recruitment stream. Skills needed for nuclear decommissioning & waste management include analytical chemistry, geochemistry, geology, land remediation, hydrogeology, wastewater engineering, occupational health, biochemistry, ecotoxicology & others

  4. EMpower Why Environmental Masters? Flexibility of masters courses Range of first degree subjects Significant project component Breadth of transferable skills 4000 graduates pa

  5. EMpower Bursaries from high profile nuclear organisations Coordination of research project placements specifically designed for Environmental & Earth Science MSc students

  6. EMpower 2009 20 projects on offer 14 funded placements with Environment Agency, AWE, British Energy, National Nuclear Lab, Sellafield, MagnoxNorth 50 student applications from 13 universities

  7. New for 2009 High profile lecture series Autumn supported by Environment Agency Universities of Edinburgh, Leeds, Lancaster, UEA, Cardiff & Imperial College Cross-disciplinary audience of undergraduate, post graduate and academic staff from earth, environmental, materials, chemistry, physics and engineering faculties. New Build, Decommissioning and Waste Management, the Regulators Viewpoint, Long-term Storage and the Geological Disposal Facility.

  8. New for 2009 Proposalseeks to record & broadcast on the Geological Society website thesix events Develop DVD teaching package to include background teaching material (notes on each subject area, guidance to additional sources of material and exam questions) a stand-alone unit for a third year BSc or Masters courses would provide high quality material for delivery of some ‘nuclear’ teaching to courses where this subject is currently absent.
