    3. Saturday, 08 September 2012 Key Objectives To reduce absence rates for schools based staff To assist schools with the management of both short and long term sickness absence To ensure a robust and accurate sickness reporting procedure for the future

Saturday, 08 September 2012 Immediate Priorities Review current Sickness Absence Policy for Schools and suggest recommendations for improvement Improve recording and reporting of sickness absence bearing in mind SWFC / Unitary Focus on stress related illness, particularly work related and employee well-being Improve Pre Employment Health clearance process

New employees not always pre-employment health cleared upon commencement Current Sickness Absence Policy frequently not understood or enforced

Saturday, 08 September 2012 Roles and Responsibilities Governors must ensure that: The school has a policy on managing sickness absence The absence reporting process is clear The Headteacher is supported in carrying out his/ her duties in relation to sickness absence The absence of all school employees is monitored and the procedure is applied where appropriate

Saturday, 08 September 2012 Roles and Responsibilities Headteachers must ensure that: All employees comply with the reporting procedure Absences are recorded and reported in accordance with the procedure Absence levels are monitored against triggers and action taken (supported where appropriate by HR) Absent staff are kept up to date with school matters Signs of stress are recognised and support/ action taken as appropriate in accordance with BCC procedures Unauthorised absence is dealt with as a matter of conduct
