Simmons in 1915 • Used by the KKK to create terror • The Klan burnt Christian crosses on hillsides or near homes of those the wish to intimidate, usually non-Caucasians • Burning the cross is a sign of their faith • Virginia Vs. Black (2003) ruled that burning the cross at a Klan rally is protected by the First Amendment

  3. KKK • Stands for Ku Klux Klan. • Was started in 1866. • KKK was officially ended in 1877. • The cross was a Christian Cross. • Founded by veterans in the Confederate Army. • The modern KKK has been repudiated by all mainstream media, political, and religious leaders.

  4. Hate Crime • The definition of hate crime is a crime motivated by prejudice against a social group. • Murders were hate crimes targeting victims by gender.
