I was a Creekside parent for many years before teaching here. • I have been teaching at Creekside for the last 6 years in various classrooms and grade levels. • This is my 3rd year in 2nd grade. • We have any amazing para educator that works with all of the 2nd grade students. Mrs. G has been working with Creekside 2nd graders for 4 years. We are so lucky to have her!

My Goals for the Year • Implement state, district, and Creekside standards. • Foster independent & self-confident learners. • Meet the individual learning needs of each child. • Incorporate technology, the workshop model, and interactive learning into classroom curriculum. • Build a classroom community based on mutual respect throughout the year. • Encourage a growth mindset and a love of learning!

  6. Common Core • This year we will continue using the Common Core State Standards report card. The subjects and content your students will be assessed on are aligned to support the achievement of these standards. • Students will be assessed using a 1-3 grading rubric, with a “3” signifying a student who consistently demonstrated at standard work. • Copies can be found on the district website under the “Assessment, Research, and Evaluation Department Tab.

I do not script out assignments and they do all of the “prep” work themselves.

Math Concepts include number sense, comparing and measuring, estimating, graphing and probability, addition and subtraction, counting, symbol recognition, place value to 100, geometry, regrouping, time, and money. Eureka (Engage New York) Sprints & Fluencies Mental math ( words, #’s and pictures) Develop life-long problem solving skills Manipulatives and personal whiteboards Extension activities Dreambox- login with your student email / ID# student number

  12. Science Lab is on Friday. • Computer Lab is on Wednesday. • P.E. is on Monday and Thursday (please be sure to wear appropriate shoes on these days). • Music is on Tuesday. • Library is on Tuesday.. Our “Typical” Daily Schedule is on our class website with more details. www.mrssillsclass.com

  13. Homework is posted on the 2nd grade Website by Sunday Evening each week. Homework is always due the following Friday. Math Homework will be sent home if extra practice is needed or if the student would like to practice. Homework should take no more than 45 minutes (this includes 20 minutes of reading). If your child is taking longer to complete their homework, please let me know.

  14. Birthdays • You are more than welcome to come in and read a special book to the class. • You may choose to send in non-edible treats for everyone. There are 24 students in our class. • Please do not distribute invites at school, unless you are including everyone. We don’t want anyone’s feelings to get hurt. Thank you!

  15. Star of the Week • The Star of the Week will begin shortly. The dates for each student are listed on our website. • For that week your child will bring in their star of the week poster along with any of the following: • Items for a guessing bag. • A special book to share. • A special item to share.

  16. Conferences Fall Conferences will be held during the week of October 7th. That week will be on a minimum day schedule all week. Dismissal will be at 11:50. I will be sending out a Conference Sign Up Genius as the week nears. The book fair will be here that week too!

  17. Scholastic Book Orders • Monthly Book Orders will be sent home. • Our class code is R89CP. • You can order online at scholastic.com/bookclubs or send in an order form with checks made out to scholastic.
