  2. History • Coax cabling was the foundation for Ethernet networks during the 70’s and remained a popular transmission medium for years. • Was replaced by twisted-pair and fiber-optic cabling over time. When working with long-established networks you may still have to work with them.

  3. Contains • Consists of central copper core surrounded by and insulator, a braided metal shielding called Braiding. As well as an outer cover called Sheath, or jacket. • May contain one strand of copper with several thin strands of copper.

  4. Physical LayerSpecifications • Thickwire Ethernet (Thicknet): original Ethernet medium • 10BASE-5 Ethernet • 1-cm diameter • Thin Ethernet (Thinnet): more flexible and easier to handle and install than Thicknet • 10BASE-2 Ethernet • .64cm diameter

  5. Specifications • All types of coax cabling has been assigned R G Specification number (R G stand for “radio guide”) • The significance differences between the cables based on the center cores. Which influences their impedance, or the resistance that contributes to controlling the signal as expressed in ohms.
