Dominant Literary Devices • Identify the two most dominant literary devices within the poem • Find MULTIPLE examples within the poem that support this
Research • Conduct some research on the following items: • Author • Time Period (when was the poem written and what was going on during that time) • Poem itself
Thesis • Looking at your theme statement from the close reading, turn this into a thesis statement that sums up what you believe the poem means and how the literary devices support that theme • Include the title of the poem and poet’s name within the statement
Introduction • You will compile a few sentences that sum up a little bit about your author and their background as you believe it relates to the poem • This is where you can include any historical connections • Must use in-text citations based on where you found the research! • Then you will Segway right into your thesis statement at the end….
Main Points (represent body paragraphs) 1. Theme…. • Explain the meaning and how the author conveys this meaning • MUST embed quotes (multiple examples) from the poem • Then, you should explain these and connect the lines from your poem back to your overall meaning. 2. Most dominate literary device… • Identify which of the lit devices were the MOST dominant and then discuss WHAT the device is and HOW it’s used. • MUST embed quotes (multiple examples) from the poem • Then, you should explain these examples and how they connect back to theme 3. 2nd most dominate literary device… • Identify which of the lit devices were the 2nd most dominant and then discuss WHAT the device is and HOW it’s used. • MUST embed quotes (multiple examples) from the poem • Then, you should explain these examples and how they connect back to theme
Parentheticals akaIn-text Citations for Poetry • Quoting Three Lines or Fewer • Incorporate the quotation into the body of your paragraph. • Use slashes (/) to indicate line breaks within the poem • Keep all punctuation intact as it appears in the poem • Use quotation marks to denote the beginning and end of the quotation • You do not include the poet's name in your parenthetical citation since you are only doing one poem. • Example • Eliot immediately engages the reader with his use of the second person in the opening lines: "Let us go then, you and I / When the evening is spread out against the sky" ( 1-2).
Parentheticals akaIn-text Citations for Poetry • Quoting Four or More Lines • Start the quotation on a new line. • Indent each line one inch from the left margin of your paragraph. • Preserve all punctuation, spacing, and line breaks exactly as they appear in the original text of the poem. • Double-space between each line. • Do not use quotation marks (unless they are used in the poem). • Example • Though he acknowledges MacBride's heroism, he does so begrudgingly: A drunken, vainglorious lout He had done most bitter wrong To some who are near my heart Yet I number him in the song; (31-34)
