  1. Welcome to Open House 2013 7th Grade GRC English Language Arts Mrs. Dianne Cline Teacher & Gifted Educational Specialist Oak Mountain Middle School

I am your child’s reading (literature), English (grammar), and writing teacher • Their grades for all these areas of Language Arts are combined & averaged into 1 grade You may access grades by signing up to receive iNow at home. Students need their binder, paper, pen or pencil, agenda, & textbook every day.

  3. Daily Class Procedures • Write the DGP sentence from the screen in your binder. DGP = Daily Grammar Practice. Open note quizzes on DGP. • Write the Power Word & definitionfrom the board in your binder. Open note quizzes given on power word, part of speech & definition. • Write the DWP from screen & your written response in your binder. DWP = Daily Writing Practice. • Go over plan for the day & homework.

  4. Make-up Work: ELA • Check Make-up Work folder by door • Morning Pass isssued so students can come to my room before school (7:15 – 7:40) • Tests/quizzes/due dates announced in advance (and on blog) • School trips/pre-planned absences do not give students more time

  5. Class Rules & Consequences Class Rules posted in class syllabus & above the door to the room Consequences • Verbal warning (1st offense) • Written warning sent home for parent signature • Detention (3rd & continuous offenses) * DISRESPECT to teacher and/or other students is automatic detention.

  6. What We Are Reading 1st 9 weeks: • Short stories, poems, nonfiction selections on theme of IDENTITY (from textbook) • Drama Unit: read libretto for Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera & listen to soundtrack 2nd 9 weeks: • Short stories, poems, nonfiction selections on theme of DECISION MAKING (from textbook) • Read novel: The City of Ember

  7. 3rd 9 weeks: • Short stories, poems, nonfiction selections on theme of PERSEVERANCE (from textbook) • Mystery unit: read novel Death on the Nileby Agatha Christie 4th 9 weeks: • Mythology, folk tales, & fables (from textbook) on theme of RITES OF PASSAGE • Adventure novel: Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson (I have books that will be issued to students)

  8. Extra Credit • Students can EARN Cline coupons • Coupons are earned for reading aloud, being class helper, showing respect, & good behavior • Coupons are presented on Fridays each week • Coupons may be redeemed for bonus points, candy, & other items I do not offer projects, writing assignments, book reports, or worksheets for extra credit.

  10. Annual GEP MeetingSept. 19, 9:00 am, Media Center • Invitations to the meeting will be going home with your child tomorrow • They must be SIGNED, √plan to attend or not attend, & RETURN to me • GEP signed at GEP meeting • If you don’t attend GEP meeting, the GEP will be sent home with your child • MUST sign & return GEP to me • Expect me to email and/or call you until GEP is returned
