  3. Welcome to Sixth Grade! • I will introduce you to sixth grade and to our classroom. • If you have any questions during my presentation, please raise your hand and wait to be called on.

  4. All About Me • My background • I grew up in Delaware. • I attended Pleasantville Elementary, McCullough Elementary, Gunning Bedford Middle, and William Penn. • I also attended Wilmington University and received my Bachelors of Education and my Masters in School Leadership and Instruction. • I have been teaching here for 19 years.

  7. My Goals • To give you the academic and social skills you need to progress through middle school, high school, and college. • To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. • To help you make new friends and discover new interests.

  8. Class Subjects • The topics we cover during sixth grade social studies are: • Geography • History • Civics • Economics

  9. Geography • “The purpose of geography is to provide 'a view of the whole' earth by mapping the location of places." - Ptolemy, 150 CE

  10. History • “History never looks like history when you are living through it.” John W. Gardner

  11. Civics • “Voting is a civic sacrament - the highest responsibility we have as Americans.” Christine Pelosi

  12. Economics • “There can be no liberty unless there is economic liberty.” Margaret Thatcher

  13. Social Studies • “Geography has made us neighbors. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners, and necessity has made us allies.” John F. Kennedy

  14. Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. • Our class rules are: • Be respectful and responsible. • Be organized and follow directions. • Be on time. • Be prepared.

  15. Homework • You have homework every night. • You are required to review your notes even if you don’t have a written assignment. • Most Fridays you will have a progress report that will need to be signed and brought back on Monday. These progress reports are a homework grade.

  16. Lateness • You must be in class when the bell rings. • First late = reprimand • Second late = reprimand and phone call home • Third late = detention • Fourth late = referral to Mr. Distler
