Facts • 6 in 10 Americans believe Islam is prone to violent extremism • 1 in 4 Americans admit to having prejudices against both Muslims and Arabs • 45% of Americans believe Islam doesn’t teach respect for other religions • 6 in 10 admit to knowing very little about Islam • 56% of those under 30, 43% of adults, and 29% of seniors view Islam favorably

Terrorism • “The unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a Government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.” • Not just Muslims, there are terrorist groups all around the world • Osama Bin-Laden & Al-Qaeda

Jihad • Jihad means “To strive for moral and religious perfection” which means living in accordance with the five pillars of Islam • Jihad refers to the struggle one must go through to “Strive in the Path of God” • The Struggle is defined both externally and internally • External struggle is with nonbelievers or enemies • Internal struggle is with their own self and how they must reject greed or temptation

  7. Five Pillars of Islam • Faith or belief in the Oneness of God and the finality of the prophet hood of Muhammad • Establishment of the daily prayers • Concern for and almsgiving to the needy • Self-purification through fasting • The pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able

Internal Jihad • Always meant to be a nobler and more finer action • It was more of a way of seeing the internal struggle as a complete way of life that should pervade and individuals day to day affairs • The great importance in the internal struggle led to its being known as the “Greater Jihad”

  9. Holy War • Muslims or their faith or territory are under attack • Islam permits military war to protect them • Islam law sets very strict laws for the conduct of such war • Recent years, the most common meaning of Jihad has meant Holy War

  10. Permissible reason for military Jihad • Self- Defense • Strengthening Islam • Protecting the freedom of Muslims to practice their faith • Protecting Muslims against oppression, which could include overthrowing a tyrannical ruler • Punishing an enemy who breaks an oath • Putting right a wrong

  11. What Jihad is not • Force people to convert to Islam • Conquer other territories to colonize them • Take territory for economic gain • Settle disputes • Demonstrates leader’s power
