  2. Six Main Periods of Soviet Propaganda • Bolshevik Era (1917-1921) • New Economic Policy (1921-1927) • First Five Year Plan • Second Five Year Plan (1928-1937) • Great Patriotic War (1939-1945) • Cold War (1946-1984)

  3. Themes of Propaganda Posters • Patriotic appeals began to overshadow the theme of communism and the great class struggle • Anti-religious themes disappeared • Attacks on Hitler and his henchman became prevalent

  4. Artists/Authors • The majority of posters were produced by young artists who created a shift towards realism • Examples: Kukryniksky, Toidze, Koretsky, and Ivanov

  5.   16. Родина-мать зовет – Motherland is calling for you This poster motivated thousands of people to join the Soviet army to fight the Nazis. This is the Russian equivalent of the “Uncle Sam Wants You.”
