  3. With your neighbor, turn to pgs. 168-169. Go over the map and timeline together. Make sure you can locate the following places and land features on the map:Taklimakan DesertPlateau of TibetGobi DesertHuang He (Yellow) RiverChang Jiang (Yangzi) RiverHimalaya MountainsShang EmpireZhou EmpireQin EmpireHan Empire

  4. Egypt, Mesopotamia, and India all formed around rivers. China is no exception. The great Chinese civilizations began to form around the Huang He River.

  5. Huang He River • Stretches east across the northern section of China into the Pacific Ocean • As it travels, it collects rich, yellow soil called loess. This gives the river a “yellow” look. • Huang He River is also called the Yellow River because of this.

  6. Chiang Jiang River Valley • People eventually started to move south to the Chang Jiang River valley. • The Chang Jiang is also called the Yangtze River

  7. Draw this chart in your Comp Bk behind the Chapter 7 Tab. With your partner, read the “Powerful Rivers” section on pgs. 170-171 and fill out the information together.

  8. Mountains and Deserts of ChinaLook at the map on pg. 171 Although China has very fertile river valleys, only about 1/10 of the land is usable for farming. Ancient China was a very isolated civilization. Look at the map on pg. 171. Talk with your neighbor, why do you think they were so isolated from other civilizations and cultures? (This would probably be something useful to add to your Comp Bk—hint, hint.)

  9. Class/Hmwk: Complete the MTV-Early China assignment. Make sure you read directions carefully. This is due Thursday.
