bell work answer the following questions

BELL WORK:Answer the following questions:

What is the product of the process of TRANSLATION?

A complementary mRNA strand

Increased production of ribosomes

A completed protein

Replacement of disabled nucleotides

A mutation is LEAST LIKELY to affect a cell when the mutation –

Reverses the order of bases in a DNA strand

Allows the total number of bases in a DNA sequence to remain the same

Replaces a base with its complementary base

Produces a codon that codes for the same amino acid as the original codon

  • On the left side of your paper, fill in the following phases:
    • G1, S, G2, M, & Cytokinesis
  • On the right side of your paper are descriptions of each phase. With your partner, read each box carefully, and decide which phase you think they describe.
    • HINTS:
      • G stands for growth.
      • S stands for synthesis (to make).
      • Mitosis is how cells copy the nucleus.
      • Cyto means cell, and kinesis means to move.
slide4
The first stage of the cell cycle is G1, where cells increase in size and make new proteins and organelles.
slide6

The third stage is called G2, where many of the organelles and proteins required for cell division are produced. When the G2 phase is complete, the cell is ready to divide.

slide8

Mitosis (M phase) is when the nucleus divides. It includes four separate stages.Cytokinesis is when the cytoplasm divides. After cytokinesis, there are two new (and identical!) cells.

Mind Map
  • At your tables, decide what phase (or phases!) of the cell cycle could include your words.
  • Words may belong with more than one phase.
  • You will have 10 minutes to discuss at your tables, then you will tell the class when I call on you.
  • We will all fill in the mind map together.
