Prescription for Sonnet Writing How to write a Shakespearean (English) Sonnet
Shakespearean Sonnets have 14 lines.
Meter • The rhythmic pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in poetry
Rhyme Scheme • ABAB CDCD EFEF GG • Rhymes may be ear-rhymes – rhymes in sound (decrease / increase) or eye-rhymes – rhymes by sight (compare / are)
Quatrain • Stanzas of four lines (3 total in a sonnet) • Should be a pause for thought in the sonnet’s message at the end of each quatrain
Couplet • Two lines that end with a rhyme; concludes the sonnet
Iamb • A metrical foot consisting of an unaccented syllable followed by an accented syllable • Example: to DAY
Iambic pentameter • A line that consists of 10 syllables with every second syllable accented • I AM a PI rate WITH a WOOD en Leg. • I WILL write WHE ther I like IT or NOT.
