  1. TUZLA

  2. Tuzla is a city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the seat of of the Tuzla Canton and is the economic, scientific, cultural, educational, health and tourist centre of northeast Bosnia. Tuzla is located in the northeastern part of Bosnia, settled just underneath the Majevica mountain range, on the Jala River.

  3. After Sarajevo and Banja Luka, Tuzla is the third largest city in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, Tuzla is also regarded as one of the most multicultural cities in the country.

  4. The name "Tuzla" is the Ottoman Turkish word for salt mine, tuzla, and refers to the extensive salt deposits found underneath the city.The Latin name of the town in Roman times, Soli, has the same etymology.

  5. Tuzla is the only city in Europe that has a salt lake at its centre. The ancient Pannonian Sea dried up around 10 million years ago, but work by researchers and scientists has now enabled a level of saline water to be kept stable at the surface, and in 2003 the Pannonian Lake was opened.

Background information • The University of Tuzla is a public higher education institution which was established in 1976. • It has obtained institutional accreditation from the Cantonal Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sports in 2015. • In 2001 the University of Tuzla became the first integrated University in Bosnia and Herzegovina, and since than has invested its efforts in creating a model of an integrated university that would work under specific conditions in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Background information • The teaching is organized in three cycles, in line with the Bologna Process: bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral studies • the University offers more than 80 study programs in bachelor, master’s and doctoral studies in 12 faculties and Academy of Performing Arts. • Currently, there are around 13.400 students studying at the University of Tuzla.

  9. The University employs 741 academic and administrative staff members. • University administrative offices consist of Rector's Office, Office of Research, Office for International Relations, Office for Teaching and Student's Affairs, Human Resources and Department of Accounting and Finances.

Internationalization • The University of Tuzla set out its commitment to the objective of increasing level of internationalization in Strategic Development Plan for the University of Tuzla for the period 2011 – 2015. In order to promote and strengthen internationalization • The University has implemented focused on activities relating to: Cooperation agreements Mobility programs Research projects

  11. Cooperation agreements • The University of Tuzla has signed over 70 cooperation agreements with national and international universities and is focused on developing relationships with the academic community worldwide.

Research and International projects • The University of Tuzla has participated in international research project and thus encouraged exchange of knowledge and collaboration in various fields of science. Currently, the University is participating in the following international projects: FP7, Erasmus, Tempus, SCOPES; SEECEL • The University also implements over 50 national projects of research which aim to build University capacities relating to learning and teaching processes.
