  1. Gethsemane: Preparing for Your CrossMark 14:32-42Message 1 in our 3-part Easter series entitled RSVP Required: How will you respond to Christ this Easter? Sunday, April 10, 2011 Speaker: Phil Hainaut

  2. Pressure: The nature of the cross experience • For Jesus: Emotional and physical distress (vs. 33,34) He took Peter, James and John along with him and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them.

  3. Pressure: The nature of the cross experience • For Jesus: Emotional and physical distress (vs. 33,34) • For the disciples: Temptation (v. 38) Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.

  4. (v. 37):he returned to his disciples and found them sleeping. “Simon,” he said to Peter, “Are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? • (v.40): When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy. They did not know what to say to him. • (v. 41): Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough!

  5. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armour of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

  6. Pressure: The nature of the cross experience • Watchful prayer: The answer to the pressure of the cross • The need for watchful prayer (vs. 32, 34, 35, 37-39)

  7. (v. 32) Jesus said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” • (v. 34) he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” • (v. 35) Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed • (v. 37) “Simon,” he said to Peter, “are you asleep? Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour? • (v. 38) Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. • (v. 39) Once more he went away and prayed.

  8. Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’

  9. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. And do this, understanding the present time: The hour has already come for you to wake up from your slumber, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.

  10. This is why it is said: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

  11. But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. You are all children of the light and children of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be awake and sober.

  12. Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.

  13. Pressure: The nature of the cross experience • Watchful prayer: The answer to the pressure of the cross • The need for watchful prayer (vs. 32, 34, 35, 37-39) • The watchful prayer

  14. It’s posture (v.35): Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed Hebrews 5:7 -During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

  15. It’s posture (v.35): Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed • It’s persistence (vs. 37, 39): Couldn’t you keep watch for one hour?... Once more he went away and prayed the same thing. • It’s plea (vs. 35, 36, 39):He fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him… Take this cup from me… Once more he went away and prayed the same thing.

  16. Mark 10:38 - Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with? Mark 14:23,24 -Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and they all drank from it.“This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many,” he said to them. John 18:11 - Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me? Revelations 19:9-11 - If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand, they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark of its name.

  17. Romans 8:28 - We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 1Corinthians 10:12,13 - If you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

  18. b. The watchful prayer • It’s posture (v.35) • It’s persistence (vs. 37, 39) • It’s plea (vs. 35, 36, 39) • It’s provider (v. 36):“Abba, Father”, he said… • It’s power (v. 36):He said “everything is possible to you” Luke 22:43 -An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him. Psalm 91:11,12 -He will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.

  19. b. The watchful prayer • It’s posture (v.35) • It’s persistence (vs. 37, 39) • It’s plea (vs. 35, 36, 39) • It’s provider (v. 36) • It’s power (v. 36) • It’s peacefulness (v. 36)Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. Philippians 4:6,7 -Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

  20. Pressure: The nature of the cross experience • Watchful prayer: The answer to the pressure of the cross • Powerful peace: The result of watchful prayer (vs. 41,42) Returning the third time, he said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the Son of Man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
