  1. Math 5Division (1 digitdivisor) Instructor: Mrs. Tew Turner

  2. In this lesson we will learn about division using one digit divisors.

  3. Math Warm-up x 5 1 1 0 5

  4. Math Warm-up 2 2 1 x 5 1 1 0 5

  5. In this lesson we will answer the questions: How do you divide whole numbers by 1 digit divisors?

  6. Vocabulary dividend- the number to be divided 24 ÷ 4 = 6 divisor- the number that is the result of multiplying two or more factors 24 ÷ 4 = 6

  7. Vocabulary quotient - the number that is the result of dividing 24 ÷ 4 = 6 6 is the QUOTIENT!

  8. Review What is Division? Remember division is separating items into groups, or finding the “fair share”! Division is FASTER than separating items one by one into groups, and it is a very useful skill in day to day life! It is repeated subtraction!

  9. Guided Practice for 1 Digit Divisors Listen to this problem. Then let’s try to solve it together for practice. Students are selling candles to raise money. A shipment arrived yesterday. The candles are sold in boxes of 6. How many boxes can be filled? A Diagram can help you decide what operation to use. n boxes

  10. Guided Practice for 1 Digit Divisors Step 1: Find 432 ÷6. Estimate first. Decide where To place the first digit in the Quotient. Use COMPATIBLE numbers. 420 ÷7 = 70 (42 and 7 are fast facts for division so they are compatible.) nboxes

  11. Guided Practice for 1 Digit Divisors Step 2: Divide the tens. Multiply and subtract. 7 6 432 -42 1 Divide. 43/6 =~7 Multiply. 7x6 = 42 Subtract. 43-42 = 1 Compare. 1 is less than 6, so we have to BRING down the 2. nboxes

  12. Guided Practice for 1 Digit Divisors Step 2: Divide the tens. Multiply and subtract. 7 6 432 -42 1 Divide. 43/6 =~7 Multiply. 7x6 = 42 Subtract. 43-42 = 1 Compare. 1 is less than 6, so we have to BRING down the 2. nboxes

  13. Guided Practice for 1 Digit Divisors Step 3: Bring down the ones. Divide the ones. Multiply and subtract. 7 6 432 -42 12 -12 0 Divide. 12/6 =2 Multiply. 2x6 = 12 Subtract. 12-12 = 0 There is nothing left over! It is done! 72 boxes filled!

  14. Guided Practice for 1 Digit Divisors with remainders Step 1: Find 380 / 6. Estimate first. Decide where To place the first digit in the Quotient. Use COMPATIBLE numbers. / 6 = 60 (36 and 6 are fast facts for division so they are compatible.) 360 / 6 = ~ 60 (The exact answer will be more since we estimated down.)

  15. Guided Practice for 1 Digit Divisors with remainders Step 2: Divide the tens. Multiply and subtract. 6 6 380 -36 2 Divide. 38/6 =~6 Multiply. 6x6 = 36 Subtract. 38-36 = 2 Compare. 2 is less than 6, so we have to BRING down the 0 in the ones place.

  16. Guided Practice for 1 Digit Divisors Step 3: Bring down the ones. Divide the ones. Multiply and subtract. 63 6 380 -36 20 -18 2 Divide. 20/6 =~3 Multiply. 3x6 = 18 Subtract. 20-18 = 2 Compare. 2 is less than 6, and we can’t bring down anything more. This means there is a remainder (left overs).

  17. Review of vocabulary for division. • 380 is the DIVIDEND. • 6 is the DIVISOR. • 63 is the QUOTIENT, and • 2 is the REMAINDER.

  18. In your Math Notebook Let’s practice! 547 / 4 762 / 5 289 / 3 607 / 8 Remember to first find the ESTIMATE answer then the EXACT ANSWER.

  19. In your Math Notebook Let’s practice! 547 / 4 550 / 5 = ~110 762 / 5 750 / 5 = ~150 289 / 3 300 / 3 = ~100 607 / 8 640 / 8 = ~ 80 Your ESTIMATE answers may be different if you rounded differently.

  20. In your Math Notebook Let’s practice! 547 / 4 762 / 5 289 / 3 607 / 8 What is the EXACT ANSWER for each one?

  21. 547 / 4 = 136 r. 3 x 1 3 6 r. 3 4 5 4 7 - 4 1 4 -1 2 2 7 - 2 4 3 Step 1: Divide Step 2: Multiply Step 3: Subtract Step 4: Bring Down Repeat until there is nothing left or only a remainder that is less than the divisor!

  22. 2. 762 / 5 = 152 r. 2 • x 1 5 2 r. 2 • 5 7 6 2 • - 5 • 2 6 • -2 5 • 1 2 • - 1 0 • 2 Step 1: Divide Step 2: Multiply Step 3: Subtract Step 4: Bring Down Repeat until there is nothing left or only a remainder that is less than the divisor!

  23. 3. 289 / 3 = 96 r. 1 x 0 9 6 r.1 3 2 8 9 - 2 7 1 9 -1 8 1 Step 1: Divide Step 2: Multiply Step 3: Subtract Step 4: Bring Down Repeat until there is nothing left or only a remainder that is less than the divisor!

  24. 4. 607 / 8 = 75 r. 7 x 0 7 5 r.7 8 6 0 7 - 5 6 4 7 -4 0 7 Step 1: Divide Step 2: Multiply Step 3: Subtract Step 4: Bring Down Repeat until there is nothing left or only a remainder that is less than the divisor!

  25. In your Math Notebook Quick Check Ray walked for 9 hours to raise money for his favorite charity. He raised $225. How much money did he raise for each hour he walked? 2. 644 / 7 = ? 3. 995 / 2 = ?

  26. Quick Check Remember to follow the 1, 2, 3 steps in your notebook! AND Estimate to see what the answer will be close to.

  27. Answers to QUICK CHECK! Ray walked for 9 hours to raise money for his favorite charity. He raised $225. How much money did he raise for each hour he walked? 225 / 9 = 25 He raised $25.00 an hour.

  28. Answers to QUICK CHECK! 1. 225 / 9 = 25 x 0 2 5 9 2 2 5 - 1 8 4 5 - 4 5 0 Step 1: Divide Step 2: Multiply Step 3: Subtract Step 4: Bring Down Repeat until there is nothing left or only a remainder that is less than the divisor!

  29. Answers to QUICK CHECK! 2. 644 / 7 = 92 x 0 9 2 7 6 4 4 - 6 3 1 4 - 1 4 0 Step 1: Divide Step 2: Multiply Step 3: Subtract Step 4: Bring Down Repeat until there is nothing left or only a remainder that is less than the divisor!

  30. Answers to QUICK CHECK! 3. 995 / 2 = 4 9 7 r. 1 x 4 9 7 r. 1 2 9 9 5 - 8 19 - 1 8 1 5 -1 4 1 Step 1: Divide Step 2: Multiply Step 3: Subtract Step 4: Bring Down Repeat until there is nothing left or only a remainder that is less than the divisor!
