  1. Improve Yourself

  2. Some people find it hard to get motivated and others are driven towards what they love. Some people work to increase their income simply because they don’t like living in a certain place or because they are unhappy with the amount of debt they have. This would be an Away from strategy, which is moving away.

  3. A person who is towards increases their income as they think about the home they want or are considering increasing their savings or retirement funds. Many people have a combination of both, such as 60/40. This is statistically the most popular combination, with most people leaning towards one side or the other. Although there is a social bias to prefer a Towards strategy, this is not always true. It is possible to have an Away from strategy that is successful and it is considered a good strategy. It is crucial that you keep your motivation high when you're avoiding things you don’t like. It is possible to get too messy in your home and not want it to get tidied. What point should the cleaning process begin? Is it at a comfortable level? Or is it a disaster before you get to the point where it's possible to clean it all? An Away From strategy to clean their house must be able to see the house become uncomfortable and get motivated to clean it.

  4. Your Away From strategy won't work if you ignore the mess and wear blinders. To make your house comfortable, you will need to remove the blinders and observe how uncomfortable it is. The person who is Towards is focused on how beautiful their house looks clean, and they are motivated to make it look that way. The Towards person will lose motivation if they forget what their house looks like after everything is put away. A Towards person must remember the good things about a neat house in order to stay motivated to keep it that way. Both cases require the same amount of effort and work, but one person is more motivated to avoid messiness than the other.

  5. You can probably identify the motivation strategy that you are using if you take a moment to think about it. Consider something you do regularly. Do you feel more motivated to work towards a goal or away from discomfort? Different contexts will likely require a different strategy. Many people have different strategies depending on how motivated they are in their work, home, and relationships. You can observe your motivation to determine which strategy you use in each context. There are ways to make your motivation strategy more powerful. Your Away From strategy will help you get away from the things that are bothering you most. You can increase your discomfort by noticing the negative aspects of what you dislike. If you are unhappy with your job, finances, or career, you can take steps to improve it. You can develop your goals and desires if you are clear about them. Imagine what it would be like to have the things you desire. It should be strong and compelling.
