In this blog, Dr. Rajat Kandhari, best dermatologist in Delhi at Dr. Kandhari’s Skin and Dental Clinic, answers to most commonly asked questions about psoriasis and with this information one can know more this skin autoimmune condition in detail. What is psoriasis? Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition characterized by itchy, flaking, inflamed, scaly, thick white, red, or silvery patches. The disease is caused by the overgrowth of cells of the skin epidermis. People often think of it as an immune condition that results in quicker replenishment of skin cells by the body (i.e. within days) which otherwise normally takes place in a few weeks. Is psoriasis contagious? No, not at all! A healthy person can be around a psoriasis patient as this condition cannot spread from person to person. But, it is possible that the patient can spread the condition anywhere on their body. A new patch of psoriasis may develop when the patient traumatizes or irritates the normal skin. What are the types of psoriasis? There are seven types of psoriasis with varying symptoms.

  2. ● Plaque psoriasis (most frequent)- They often flare-up on the scalp, knees, elbows, and lower back but can also appear on other areas. Its symptoms include raised, red, inflamed skin covered with white, silvery scales that may sometimes itch or burn. ● Guttate psoriasis- This often has its onset in children or young adults. It is characterized by small, pink-red bumps that suddenly appear and subside within a few weeks or longer. Mostly appear on thighs, upper arms, trunk, and scalp. ● Inverse psoriasis- The skin has bright red, shiny, and smooth patches that can worsen with sweating and rubbing. Typically, they are located in the groin, armpits, under the breasts, and skin folds of buttocks and genitals which have skin-on-skin contact. ● Pustular psoriasis- It is an uncommon kind i.e. mostly found in adults. This appears as small, pus-filled bumps with surrounding red skin and typically show up on hands and feet. ● Erythrodermic Psoriasis (least common)- It is the serious type that causes widespread burnt and painful skin along with chills and muscle weakness that can lead to hypothermia. ● Nail psoriasis- It commonly occurs in people having psoriasis arthritis. The nails appear pitted, yellow-brown, feel tender or painful and have separated nail bed as well as chalk-like material underneath. ● Psoriatic arthritis- It is a condition wherein the joints appear sore, stiff, and swollen and have accompanying discoloration of the skin.
