  2. In the previous chapter, we learnt that… • Some living things look the same at each stage of the life cycle. • Some living things look very different at each stage of the life cycle.

  7. Notice that there are three stages in the life cycle of a chicken.

  9. How does an egg become a chicken?

  10. The chick develops inside the eggshell. After 21 days, the chick pecks at the eggshell to come out.

  12. There are four stages in the life cycle of a butterfly.

  13. Notice that the young of the butterfly do not look like the adult.

  14. Let’s look at the life cycle of a butterfly more closely.

  16. A caterpillar changes its skin many times as it grows. This process is called moulting. A caterpillar eats and grows to prepare itself for the next stage. larva (caterpillar)

  17. The caterpillar stops feeding. It fastens itself to a leaf or twig and spins a case around itself. pupa

  18. When the case breaks open, a beautiful butterfly flies out.

  20. There are three stages in the life cycle of a cockroach.

  21. The young of the cockroach looks very much like the adult.

  22. Let’s look at cockroaches now!

  23. The female cockroach lays its eggs in an egg case. Each egg case contains 16 to 50 eggs.

  25. What’s the difference between a nymph and an adult cockroach?

  26. I know! A nymph is smaller and it doesn’t have wings.
