This guide provides a clear overview of how to name binary covalent compounds composed of two nonmetals. Learn the essential rules for naming, including how to designate the first and second nonmetals correctly. The first nonmetal retains its name but requires prefixes only if there are two or more atoms, without using "mono". The second nonmetal’s name is modified with a prefix (if applicable) and ends with "-ide". Understanding these conventions is crucial, as all compounds must remain neutral in charge.

Remember… COMPOUNDS ARE NEUTRAL!!!
Binary Covalent Compounds • Compound composed of a Nonmetal and a Nonmetal • Binary means Two • Each Compound will have a First Name and a Last Name
Rules for the First Name • Name the first nonmetal • If the subscript indicates two or more atoms, use the prefixes from the table (Di- to Deca) • DO NOT USE THE PREFIX “MONO” FOR THE FIRST NONMETAL NAME!!!
Rules for the Second Name • If the subscript indicates that there are one or more atoms use the prefixes from the table (Mono- to Deca-) • Change the ending of the Second Nonmetal to an –ide ending
