  2. ”Central” Conflict • The struggle the main character faces. • There is one, and only one, “central” conflict. • Somehow relates to the theme of the story.

  3. External Conflict Takes place between the main character and… • an outside force or • opposing character.

  4. External Conflict Ex: Outside Force Mr. Wong struggled through the storm to save the Tigers from the icy snow and blinding rain.

  5. External Conflict Ex: Opposing Character The Fish punched Mr. Wong in the face. Twice!

  6. Internal Conflict An “internal conflict” takes place within heart and/or mind of the main character.

  7. Internal Conflict Ex: Mrs. Fisher struggled with this dilemma in her heart: which class did she love more? Her first period, or her third period? Such a difficult choice!!!

  8. Internal Conflict Ex: Mr. Wong agonized over this decision: should he drink Pepsi or Coke with his lunch? He just couldn’t decide.

  9. Find the Conflict Both types of conflict in this story. Find an example of each.

  10. Discussion In this story, is the “central” conflict an internal or external conflict? Why? Explain in one paragraph.
