  1. Questions we will answer today: • When did the church begin? • By whose authority was it built? • Whose authority controls it? • Are you a faithful member of it?

  2. churches of Christ in the New Testament 1 of 17Origin of the Lord’s church Don R. Taaffe, Gospel Preacher, Dunedin 10/11/2009 Matthew 16:16-19 Ephesians 3:4-10 1 Peter 2:9-10 Daniel 2:44 Romans 16:16

  3. Matthew 16:16-19 • 16 Simon Peter answered and said,"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." 17 Jesus answered and said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." (NKJV)

  4. Ephesians 3:4-10 4 a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. 5 In former generationsthis mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: 6 that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. 7 Of this gospelI have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. 8 Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, 9 and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; 10 so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made knownto the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. (NRSV)

  5. 1 Peter 2:9-10 • 9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. (NRSV)

  6. Daniel 2:44 • 44 And in the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, nor shall this kingdom be left to another people. It shall crush all these kingdoms and bring them to an end, and it shall stand forever; (NRSV)

  7. Romans 16:16 • 16 Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you. (NKJV)

  9. 1 Peter 4:11 Matthew 16:18 Eph. 1:22-23; 4:4 Are All from God? Any from God? Where did they come from? Which is right? Let the Bible Answer The members of the church of Christ have been saying: “We speak were the Bible speaks, and are silent were it is silent, We call Bible things by Bible names, and do Bible things in Bible Ways” Over 350 Main Line Churches?Thousands of Churches? Ephesians 1:22-23; 4:4 (about Christ) 1:22 And he has put all things under his feet and has made him the head over all things for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. 4:4 There is one bodyand one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope of your calling, (NRSV) Matthew 16:18 18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. (NRSV) 1 Peter 4:11 11 Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen. (NRSV)

  10. Inheritance from God – Romans 8:16-17(1 Cor. 6:9-11; Gal. 3:26,29) Compromise is a real danger - Galatians 1:6-10 (1 Peter 4:11) Distinctive gospel preaching is vital - Romans 1:16-17; 2 Tim. 4:2-4 If we do not know history we are doomed to repeat it Galatians 1:6-10 6 I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, 7 which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospelto you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. 9 As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ. (NKJV) Romans 1:16-17 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "The just shall live by faith." (NKJV) Romans 8:16-17 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs — heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. (NKJV) Why is The History of Lord’s church Important?

  11. Church – Assembly – Congregation – Greek: ekklesia NT:1577, from ek, "out of," and klesis, "a calling" (kaleo, "to call"), was used among the Greeks of a body of citizens "gathered" to discuss the affairs of state, (from Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words,) Christians – Disciples - Christianos (khris-tee-an-os'); from NT:5547; a Christian, i.e. follower of Christ: (Biblesoft's New Exhaustive Strong's Numbers and Concordance with Expanded Greek-Hebrew Dictionary. ) Denomination names; Catholic, Methodist, Baptist, Jehovah witness, Mormons etc. – Not found in Bible TERMS USED IN LESSON

  12. Begin; come into existence How do we determine the origin of the church of Christ? What is the church of Christ? ORIGIN OF THE CHURCH

  13. Apostasy (departure from truth) started from the very beginning of the church (Ananias & Sapphira Acts 5:1-10; Demas 2 Tim 4:10; Creaens Acts 17:21; Seven churches of Rev 2c) Denominationalism did not start until 606 A.D. WHEN DID THE CHURCH BEGIN? • Matthew 16:18 • Acts 20:28 Adam Moses John Jesus Pentecost (Acts 2) NO CHURCH OF CHRIST CHURCH OF CHRIST 33 A.D. Acts 2:47 5

  14. JESUS BUILT HIS CHURCH (Matthews 16:16-18) 1 Corinthians 1:9, 2 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 2 To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: (NKJV) Isaiah 28:16 16 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Whoever believes will not act hastily. (NKJV) 1 Corinthians 7:17 17 But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk . And so I ordain in all the churches. (NKJV) 2 Thess 2:13-14 13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through Sancti- fication by the Spirit and belief in the truth, 14 to which He called you by our gospel, for the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. (NKJV) 1 Peter 2:9-10 9 But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. (NKJV) • Built by & on Son of God,Isaiah 28:16 (1 Peter 2:4-6; Eph. 2:20) • Called out ones (saved) –1 Corinthians 7:17 • By God thru gospel - 2 Thess. 2:13-14 • Out of darkness - 1 Peter 2:9-10 • Into fellowship - 1 Corinthians 1:9, 2

  15. Acts 2:37-41, 47 37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Men and brethren, what shall we do?" 38 Then Peter said to them,"Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off,as many as the Lord our God will call." 40 And with many other words he testified and exhorted them, saying, "Be saved from this perverse generation." 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved.(NKJV) JESUS BUILT HIS CHURCH (Matt. 16:16-18) 1 Corinthians 12:13 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body — whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free — and have all been made to drink into one Spirit. (NKJV) Ephesians 1:22-23 22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all. 16. Ephesians 2:11-13 11 Therefore remember that you, once Gentiles in the flesh — who are called Uncircumcision by what is called the Circumcision made in the flesh by hands — 12 that at that time you were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world. 13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. (NKJV) Ephesians 2:19-22 19 Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.(NKJV) 1 Timothy 3:15-16 15 but if I am delayed, I write so that you may know how you ought to conduct yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: (NKJV) Luke 24:47 47 and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. (NKJV) • Isaiah 2:2-3 • 2 Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the • mountain of the LORD's house Shall be established on • the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above • the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. 3 Many people • shall come and say, "Come, and let us go up to the • mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of • Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in • His paths.“ For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And • the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. Dan 2:44-45 44 And in the days of these kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed; and the kingdom shall not be left to other people; it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand forever. 45 Inasmuch as you saw that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it broke in pieces the iron, the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold — the great God has made known to the king what will come to pass after this. The dream is certain, and its interpretation is sure.“ (NKJV) THE CHURCH IN PROPHECY Matthew 16:18-19 18 And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. 19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."
