  2. Do the Haiku! But...how? 1. Every Haiku should have only THREE LINES. 2. Each line should only have a certain number of syllables. So, Line 1: 5 syllables Line 2: 7 syllables Line 3: 5 syllables

  3. What is a syllable? “All words have syllables. A word might have one, two, or even more syllables.” “Reading has two syllables: read (clap)—ing (clap).” To demonstrate, clap as you say each syllable. “Blue has one syllable: blue (clap).” “Pumpkin has two syllables: pump (clap)—kin (clap).” “Now you try. Clap your hands for each syllable in the word pig.”

  4. Practice How many syllables are there in each word or set of words? • Twenty five • Mice • Hotdog • Window panels • Grocery store • paper • yellow • cars • elephant • mustang • Adult Education Center

  5. Back to the Haiku • A subtle word or a little clue can be powerful. • Haiku poems used to be only about nature (trees, frogs, seasons, etc.). However, you may write about anything that is related to your theme. • Boil it down to exactly what you want to express because you only have a few number of words you can write.

  6. How to Write a Haiku • Make a list about a topic related to your them. • Now, pick some things from your list, and start playing with the words. • Arrange them and rearrange them on a page. • Count the syllables. • Put them together in all different ways, until they fit perfectly into a 5-7-5 Haiku.
