  1. GrammarPre-intermediate Zero and first conditionals

  2. Thinking About Your Future: Why Study Chemistry?

  3. Zero conditional • We use it when we talk about things that are generally true. • The structure is: if + present tense ... present tense If you cut an onion, it makes you cry. If you are happy, I’m happy.

  4. if - position • An if- clause can come at the beginning or end of a sentence. • When it comes first, it is often separated by a comma (,). If you visit London, go to The Natural History Museum. Go to The Natural History Museum if you visit London.

  5. First conditional • We use it when we talk about a particular condition or situation in the future, and its result. • There is a real possibility that this condition will happen. If I see John tomorrow, I’IItalk him about it. ( = I think, I’ll see him.)

  6. First conditional • The basic pattern for first conditional sentences is: if + present tense...will + infinitive without to If you study chemistry, you’ll never stop learning. If I havetime, I’llclean up the garden. I’llbe sorry if I don’t pass this exam.

  7. Remember • Both parts of afirst conditional sentence talk about the future, even though a present tense is used after if. • We don’t usually use will after if. If it rains, we’llhave the party indoors. NOT If it will rain, we’ll have the party indoors.

  8. Unless • We can use unless to mean if ... not. I run every morning if it isn’t cold OR I run every morning unless it’s cold. That plant willdieif you don’t water it. OR That plant will die unless you water it.
