Analyzing EGN (Jaw Tracking) • What is ROM (slant/max opening, lateral, protrusive) <40mm for females and <42 for males is restrictive from the norm • Velocity curves – smooth “egg” shaped (300mm/second) is normal • ‘Crossover’ on Sagittal view of velocity curve usually due to retruded mandible, or anterior misguidance • Lateral Deflection? >3mm on opening? If so it should coincide with a reduced lateral ROM to Opposite side. • Visible Facial Asymmetry? Can occur from injury during growth • Age? (older – more likely to be stable, younger more progressive, this info will alter the prognosis) • Previous Tx for condition? When and What?

Analyzing Velocity Tracings • “pregnant trace” (bowed out sagittal view) reveals headgear is facing fwd • Normal Velocity = between 300-350 mm/sec • “Bradykinesia” or slower velocity is usually due to muscle dysfunction • Normal velocity curve is “egg-like’ with terminal velocity 75-150 mm/sec at top ‘flat’ part of curve • Reduced terminal velocity can be due to tooth interferences (deflecting in CO) deflection from lingually inclined upper incisors, PDL or pulpal inflammation. • “dyskinesia” usually from intracapsular dysfunction of the Joint Considerations…

Analyzing ROM Tracings • “Crossover” in sagittal view is due to anterior tooth interferences • “distalized” closing cycle typically represents a retruded mandibular position • Frontal view ‘deflections’ do not return to midline; ‘deviations’ do return to midline • Horizontal view shows lateral movement discrepancies • ‘closed lock’ disc displacement shows up in horizontal view as limited movement towards the contralateral side of the affected disc • i.e. lock on left – limited movt to Right excursive Considerations…
