    3. 6/13/2012 3 Design Drafting 17 designers and drafters, augmented by contractors as needed by projects Responsible for project design and drafting activities both within the Division and for outside 'customers'. Interact with project engineers, physicists and managers in the development of component, assembly, and system designs. Document control of all drawings, files, specifications, parts lists, releases, and change orders. Personnel assigned directly to project engineers. Group provides means for training, document control, administrative tasks, transitions between projects.

    4. 6/13/2012 4 CIS 6 Computer Professionals and Technicians; ~500 devices Responsible for the computers, networks and administrative/user databases in the division. Installation/maintenance and specification of desktop computing software and hardware, server systems Support services such as printers/plotters and data backups and a division wide helpdesk Specific support roles in CAD and CAM on site. Home to the Lab CAD Manager (LCM).  The LCM has responsibility for managing the CAD/CAM/CAE/PDM software for all of the divisions and sections of Fermilab. Long term planning, implementation and upkeep of all TD information systems Responsible for TD computer security (coordinated w/ CD) Property database for all TD devices

    5. 6/13/2012 5 Material Control Acquisition Cost Estimating; Supplier Development; Fabrication Advice Contract Development / Advice Originate, Enter, Track Requisitions; ProCard Purchasing Inventory Control, Process Kits, Traceability & Documentation Quality Control Incoming Inspection, at source or in IB4 Coordinate Measuring Machines (4 Mechanical Cordaxes, 2 Optical OGP) Laser Tracker Hysteresigraph Ferrite/Permeability Indicator(s) Vacuum & Hydrostatic Leak Testing Hardness Testing Surface Finish Measurement Ultrasonic Testing (flaw and thickness measurement) Coating Thickness Measurement Calibration Services

    6. 6/13/2012 6 Material Control Component Storage Incoming reception Organization of parts; storage short and long term Distribution of parts and kits to projects as needed Storage of Magnets for FNAL Operations Tracking Deliveries to AD as needed Magnet moves Prep of shipments for local and overseas

    7. 6/13/2012 7 Machine Shop The Shop is run as a service to Fermilab and Fermilab Users for: Quick turnaround tasks Shutdown requirements; operations Low quantity R&D / pre-production jobs Prototyping; manufacturing advice / interactions Services not readily available outside the lab Tolerance requirements & development Specialty welding Radioactive machining capabilities Risk reduction It is run on a chargeback basis, using a single hourly rate: Covers salaries and fringe; education and training; normal machine repair New equipment is requested through the yearly laboratory equipment funding process The Shop is flexible. In addition to the Village Shop, there are 3 satellite shops exist to provide close relationships to groups through the life of R&D and specialty projects

    8. 6/13/2012 8 The Village Machine Shop is the primary facility (located in Lab 4) and houses (among other things): Our most modern CNC equipment 2005 Charmilles 440cc Wire EDM w/ Rotary Axis 2004 Haas VF-9 Vertical 4 Axis CNC Milling Machine w/ part probing cap 1999 Haas VF-0E Vertical 4 Axis CNC w/ Rigid Tapping Our Specialty Equipment not available elsewhere ‘Queen’ vertical mill, w/ travel 252” x 48” x 72” Assorted older lathes and mills Main weld shop w/ capabilities in GTAW, SMAW Plasma Welding Acetylene Cutting to 30” Pressure vessel and structural detail welding

    9. 6/13/2012 9 Machine Shop In 2005: Fermilab purchased about 117M$ of goods and services. Of the 117M$, direct machining work accounted for 5.3M$ Of the 5.3M$ 3.1M$ was to the Fermilab Machine Shops, average cost = $1277 2.2M$ was to outside Machine Shops, average cost = $4044 The Fermilab shops serve the niche market, with small tasks averaging less than 24 total working hours; larger machining jobs are sent off site FNAL shops do not control the placement of orders, nor do they have the right of first choice on orders The Shop size is actively managed consistent w/ Fermilab needs; current size is a minimum
