  1. Super Connected City Plan for Derry ~ Londonderry Tina Gillespie 13 February 2013

  2. The Regional City of the North West of Northern Ireland, Derry is located on the border with the Republic of Ireland

  3. The Super-Connected Cities Initiative • Overall aim of the scheme: • To maximise the availability of ultrafast broadband (by adding to the planned rollouts of commercial communications providers), and • Achieve city-wide high-speed wireless connectivity.

  4. ‘Ultrafast’ refers to minimum download speeds to the user as close to 80 – 100 Mbps as is currently possible, or higher • Focus on SME’s and strategic employment / regeneration zones to support economic growth • £50 million has been allocated to Phase 2 of the scheme, to enable smaller cities to become super-connected.

  5. Derry ~ Londonderry competed with 26 other cities (only 12 were successful). • Derry’s Super-Connected Cities Plan (SCCP) sets out how the city aims to achieve the ambitions of ultrafast coverage with fixed broadband and ubiquitous wireless connectivity.

  6. Derry secures fibre first • Derry has become the first city in the UK and Ireland to be completely wired up with superfast broadband. • Every single Street cabinet in Derry City has now been upgraded with fibre-to-the-cabinet technology

  7. As a result, almost 39,000 homes and businesses now have access to download speeds of up to 40 – 80 Mbps. • Importantly, this technology drives choice and competition because it is delivered on an open access basis to allow other broadband service providers to access the network

  8. What this investment is expected to deliver • Economic • Social • Public Sector

  9. Fixed infrastructure: what are the options? • Commission guidelines for broadband networks • Current status of fixed broadband in the city • Digital Zones and FTTP Voucher Scheme

  10. Wireless infrastructure: what are the options? • Wireless City – expansion of existing footprint and addition of further capacity. • Wireless City – small cell architecture hosted by street furniture
