This program delves into the potential replacement cycle for library PCs, testing technologies like Desktop Virtualization and Deep Freeze. The investigation explores the challenges of multimedia performance and high infrastructure costs. It also looks into enabling PACs to function as secure "download kiosks" while emphasizing patron privacy and malware protection. The Windows 7 pilot program at Oakmont is highlighted, along with considerations for new PC hardware options. Future steps involve gathering feedback, evaluating upgrade options, and preparing for the 2011 PC deployment.

2010 Technology Investigation • Develop PC Personas for next replacement cycle • Test new technologies • Desktop Virtualization • Deep Freeze • Windows 7 • Office 2010
Desktop Virtualization Pilot • Pilot occurred at Whitehall in late July – early Sept • Both local OS streaming and hosted desktops tested • Multimedia performance was not adequate • Infrastructure and software licensing costs too expensive
Deep Freeze • Investigate the future viability of enabling PACs to act as “download kiosks” while addressing: • Patron privacy • Protecting the machines from malware • All system changes are discarded after each reboot • This enables us to allow patrons and/or staff to install software • EnvisionWare would be configured to reboot between sessions
Windows 7 Pilot • Pilot at Oakmont underway, starting with one public PC and one shared staff PC • Windows 7 will be deployed remotely to existing PCs • New version of the EnvisionWare PC Reservation Client required • Deep Freeze will be installed
New PC Hardware • Currently pricing out hardware from multiple vendors • Desktop options • Standard PC • All-in-One (space savings) • Single purpose PC (lower cost) • Laptop options • Examine shorter 2 year product lifecycle • Examine lease or purchase options • Evaluate a service option for libraries to purchase and use their own alternative models
What’s Next? • Gather feedback • Develop options and offerings • Determine viability of full Windows 7 upgrade on current hardware • Prepare for 2011 PC Deployment!
