  2. Background • Started in 1982 as a condition of a Probation Order- confusing • Community Service Law introduced in 2001 • Direct alternative to custody • Minimum sentence 40 hours- maximum 480 hours. Courts stipulate the alternative. Sliding scale. • Not a therapeutic work scheme!

  3. Resources • 1 full time Assistant Manager • 1 part-time Assistant Manager and Administrator • 9 part-time supervisors • What makes a good supervisor? • 1 owned vehicle and a partnership scheme with TTS • Tools and equipment

  4. Process • All clients assessed for suitability at SER stage • Following sentence interview arranged with Assistant Manager, young person and parent. • Expectations and rules of scheme • Given instructions for work. Either group or suitable individual placement

  5. A typical working day • Team receive briefing about clients • Clients report for work at 08.50am for 09.00am start • Transported to work sites • Allocation takes into account who is able to perform the work, location and potential conflicts • Weekends - 5 hour shifts and weekdays 7.5 hour shifts

  6. Compliance • Strict but fair - avoid low expectations! • If reporting becomes poor the young person and appropriate adult attend a compliance meeting - problem solving and encouragement • We want people to succeed - low breach rate • Court as a last resort

  7. Placements • Non profit making and for community benefit • Health and Safety compliant • Project must be practicable and achievable • Encourage job satisfaction • Rationale explained • Variety of tasks available

  8. Work undertaken • In 2011 over 20,000 hours were undertaken • 9 young people from Youth Court only
