  1. Institute of Plasma Physics AS CR Department of Pulse Plasma Systems Group: Electrical discharges in water and in gas/liquid environments Group leader: Dr. Petr Lukes lukes@ipp.cas.cz Za Slovankou 3, Prague, Czech Republic www.ipp.cas.cz • Studied topics • Elementary chemical and physical phenomena induced by non-equilibrium plasma of electrical discharges in liquid (mainly water) and in gas-liquid environments (discharge plasma diagnostics, analyses of chemicalproducts of plasma in liquid and gaseous phase, aqueous-phase chemistry of electrical discharge plasma in water and in gas-liquid environments, interactions of plasma with the condensed liquid and at gas/liquid interfaces) - WG1, WG2 • Development of high voltage discharge (pulsed and DC) generators of various design and electrode geometry producing plasma directly in the liquid, in the gas phase in contact with the liquid or in both phases simultaneously - WG1, WG2 • Research of chemical and biological effects of electrical discharge plasma in water and gas/liquid environments and their potential environmental, biological, chemical applications (decomposition of organic pollutants in water, inactivation of microorganisms in water, organic synthesis, etc.) – WG4 Streamer discharges in water Multichannel discharges in water Discharges excited in vapor bubbles Gas discharges in contact with water

  2. Main experimental techniques and research equipment • Lab-scale pulse power generators for generation of electrical discharges in liquid: - monopolar and bipolar (~µs) pulse high-voltage generators with spark gap switch (± 40kV, 1-100Hz, 0.2-5 J/pulse) - monopolar (~µs) pulse high-voltage MPC generator (30kV, 1-500Hz, 0.3 J/pulse) - rectangular pulse forming generator with thyratron switch (2 μs, load 2kΩ, 50Hz, 30kV) • Various discharge reactors for generation of plasma in liquid and in gas/liquid environments: - pulsed discharge point-plane electrode system in water - pulsed discharge wire-cylinder system in water with porous ceramic-coated rod electrode - DC diaphragm (capillary) discharge system exciting plasma in vapor bubbles in water - pulsed gas discharge in contact with water surface generated using planar RVC electrode - RF atmospheric pressure plasma jet in contact with water surface • High-voltage measurement and fast time resolved systems for data acquisition and processing • Fast multichannel emission spectroscopy and LIF diagnostics • Instrumentation for chemical analysis in liquid and gaseous mixtures: – HPLC chromatography with photo diode array UV/Vis and fluorescence detection – ion chromatography with simultaneous UV and suppressed conductivity detection – GC chromatography with mass spectrometry and He plasma ionization detection – scanning UV/Vis spectrophotometry of aqueous analytes • Instrumentation for biological analysis in aqueous solutions: – microbiological facilities for cultivation and analysis of bacteria – multi-mode microplate reader with UV/Vis, fluorescence and luminescence detection – real-time PCR (qPCR) • Main research collaborations • Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL, USA (www.fsu.edu) • Kumamoto University, Kumamoto, Japan (www.kumamoto-u.ac.jp) • Comenius University, Bratislava, Slovakia (www.uniba.sk) • Publications related to COST TD1208 • Lukes P., Locke B.R., Brisset J.L.
