  2. What are Telomeres? • Telomeres are small bits of DNA on the end of chromosomes. • Telomeres know how many times a cell should divide.

What do Telomeres do? • Telomeres prevent chromosomes from sticking together. • Telomeres help to keep some of the bases that are part of genes that code for vital proteins. • Help to regulate genes and provide an anchoring point on chromosomes. • Each time cells divide the telomere is cut shorter until no more cells can be divided.

Why are Telomeres important? • Every time the chromosome replicates a piece of the telomere is lost, this is thought to be the result of cell aging. • Telomere shortening can cause some problems. • If there is no telomere on the chromosome then they will stick together and will begin to mix up. • If the chromosomes mix up then uncontrollable cell growth will occur. • All reducing cells use telomeres to start cell division and with out telomeres our cells can’t divide.

  7. How are telomeres related to aging? • Mitosis is the process of cell division. • As the telomeres get shorter they begin to age as it is harder to divide the cells. • As cells age so do we. • When telomeres get to their shortest point they malfunction and die. • If humans keep healthy then the telomeres might last longer.
