  1. World ViewChapters 22-23 Written by Nancy Pearcey and Charles Colson Presented by: David M. Hasz

  2. Social Inequity • What first caused Bernard Nathanson to campaign for legalization of abortion?

  3. The Cause • The fact poor women were having to seek back alley abortions while affluent women found sympathetic doctors and faked miscarriages.

  4. The team • Nathanson and Lader joined together and founded the National Abortion Rights Action League. • These MEN fashioned the strategy to legalize abortion.

  5. The Strategy • Make it a women’s issue only women were allowed to express an opinion on. • Demonize the Catholic hierarchy. – bunch of white males.

  6. Nathanson switches careers • Moved from caring for mothers to caring for babies and performing abortions. • The ultrasound machine was invented. • Trouble for Nathanson!!

  7. Facts of human development • Heartbeat on 18th day • Six weeks – major organ systems developed • 12 weeks no new development

  8. Nathanson comes clean • Confesses to over 60,000 deaths as head of CRASH. • He wrote: “in abortion we are taking life”

  9. Scientific not religious • Nathanson’s problem with abortion. • He stated that a society is judged by how it treats the weak, he found a weaker person than the poor women… the unborn.

  10. The Silent Scream • Released in 1985 and transformed the abortion debate. • Ridiculed Nathanson for faking the tape.

  11. Then.. • When tape was proven real, they decided to show that fetuses were not able to feel pain. (no fact basis for this)

  12. Nathanson’s final outcome • Nathanson eventually got saved! • Partial Birth Abortion Ban loses in the senate.

  13. What does this mean now • The draw then is the draw still.. American materialism • Advertising industry – the promise of redemption through materialism and commercialism

  14. The gospel of commercialism • That for every need, every insecurity, every worry, there is a product for sale that can satisfy our need, pump up our self -esteem, soothe our worry.

  15. Advertising … • Ads took on religious overtones. Not sin-guilt – redemption, but problem – anxiety – resolution. • Some personal faith – “I found it”, “It’s the right thing”

  16. Other religious forms • Ads take on personal relationship with the divine: “Me and my RC”, “You’re in good hands” • Some blessings: “Thanks, Delco”

  17. Some even have religion blatantly • Delivered from flood by Allstate • Volvo can save your soul • There’s a spirit in that bottle

  18. Why the poor are better off • Material riches offer no comfort… The poor are better off than the rich because the poor still think money will buy happiness; the rich know better.

  19. Others lurking • Consumerism is America’s favorite substitute religion, it is not the only one. Others have proven equally seductive...and even more destructive. • Other answers to redemption
