WorldCat Local The USF Experience Bill Garrison Dean, USF Libraries ASERL Meeting November 17-18, 2009
Reasons for Implementing WorldCat Local • User dissatisfaction with current interface • Presumption that users know what they are looking for when they approach the catalog
Benefits • Users have a single interface • Fast, seamless access to the most appropriate delivery options • Simple, network-level implementation • Integrates with local ILS • Users see easiest to get items first with access to libraries worldwide • Simple keyword search • Library can be reached from Google, Yahoo!, etc. via the WorldCat.org platform
Features • Configurable options for interface, systems and content • Single search box • Faceted-browse search refinement • Metasearch option provides access to physical, electronic and digital library resources through a single search • Unified record display of descriptive information, shelf locations/status and delivery options Use WorldCat tools 使用WorldCat工具 WorldCat-tools gebruiken Usar herramientas de WorldCat Utilisez les outilsWorldCat WorldCat-Tools verwenden
Features (continued) • User contribution of reviews, ratings and lists • Trial evaluative content from Syndetic Solutions (through June 30, 2010) • Syndication of your holdings data to major Web search engines • Ongoing enhancements
Configurability • Interoperation with ILS and resource sharing services • Branding elements (logo, colors, custom WorldCat.org URL) • Navigation links to local services such as OpenURL resolver and virtual reference • Factors influencing relevance ranking • Local and remote sources of full text, electronic content and digital objects included in search results
Latest Developments • All licensed content OCLC offers (FirstSearch databases, NetLibrary, CAMIO, ArchiveGrid, and OAIster) searchable on WorldCat.org platform for authenticated subscribers • Sandbox for interested libraries to test licensed content in WorldCat Local • Institutions can configure access via WorldCat.org interface at their discretion • Launching of WorldCat Local “Quick Start”
Developments Next Phases • Developing staff access approach and implementing tracking statistics • Improvements of the search, retrieval, display and integration of results with the other Web 2.0 features available via WorldCat.org
USF Challenges • Functionality exists at the record level only with account creation. For users who want to create lists, e-mail records, print, export to RefWorks, an account must first be created • From the index display there is no indication of which of the USF Libraries holds the title as there is no way to limit by library/location • Users and staff appear to prefer our local catalog
USF Challenges Authentication for NetLibrary not supported from a referring URL; IP authentication only
Unified record buries e-books in edition where there is print and online equivalent
