Trust Action Youth Association

This project focuses on building livelihoods through two interventions: Village Savings & Loan Agents (VSLA) and Farmer Schools. It successfully promoted trust, tolerance, and understanding among beneficiaries, resulting in improved group dynamics and performance. However, challenges with language and interpretation affected some group dynamics. The project also effectively integrated peacebuilding strategies, transforming conflicts and fostering collaboration among families and clans. Overall, the project demonstrates the importance of conflict transformation and the positive impact it can have on resilience-building in food security and livelihood programming.

  1. Trust Action Youth Association Resilience Programming in Food Security and Livelihoods.

  2. Theme “Supporting Resilience by mainstreaming Peace building in FSL Programming ”

  3. Project Summary • The Project mainly focused on Building Livelihoods for the beneficiaries targeting 2 interventions. • 1) VSLA – Village Savings & Loan Agents • 2) Farmer Schools.

  4. .Farmer Schools/VSLA – What went well • The Farmer schools & VSLA were an excellent opportunity to have sharing and have personal interactions reducing anticipations and tensions • This was a great chance to listen and respect the views of other people. • Discussions on the best way to go about challenges were participatory , leading to the promotion of tolerance and understanding among the group members. • Building of Trust among partners in an intervention. • Promoted levels of acceptance and Tolerance.

  5. What Did not go well • The Group dynamics were challenging especially in language and interpretation . In some instances it needed some interpretation in dialects which brought in some tribal sentiments. Inciting the powers of their differences • While we randomly picked the beneficiaries of the VSLA according to their weighted vulnerabilities, and made them in to groups, we later realized that some groups were underperforming and their group dynamics were not good. • Here we found out that after using the beneficiary selection criteria, we should have allowed the beneficiaries to form group themselves while being guided for better group performance and harmony, because it involved money.

Resilience and Peace building • In our Project Design, we had foreseen that f information gotten from the beneficiaries and their direct involvement would be key in building on existing knowledge. • This project was done among some households that had relationship challenges. Disagreements, disputes and even attacks happened between the families and even the clans. • At the onset of the project, the inception meeting brought out clearly the common enemy as being lack of food. • This refocussed the energies (Conflict Transformation) and commitments were made among the local administration, community gate keepers on the importance of setting differences aside to be able to tap in to the benefits of this livelihood project. • Surprisingly, not even one dispute was registered as the families from the different clans interacted seamlessly and tirelessly for their common good. The Project achieved a peace building output as the families were able to set aside and accept their differences (Positive coping strategies), while agreeing to work together for a common purpose.

  7. TAKE HOME on Conflict and Resilience building ( Outcome Harvesting) • It was noted that Conflict transformation by introducing IGA(Income Generating activities ), greatly helped refocus on what the common enemy was(Lack of adequate food) • Instead of targeting each other, it was more prudent to target the issues at hand and get them addressed or even better solved. • Openness and reconciliation in order to pull together was a principal point of unearthing fears and anxieties so that groups worked together unreservedly. • Most of the Conflict situations at the grassroots level are resource based. Promotion of tolerance and understanding helped summon internal strengths of communities to tackling resource based issues and promote IGAs and diversity in resource mobilization.
