  3. Introduction • What is Linux? • Linux is an operating system that runs on a server not the mainframe. • The purpose of an operating system is to organize and control hardware and software. Examples of other operating systems are DOS, Windows, MAC, UNIX. • Changing Odyssey to run on Linux is almost completely invisible to the end user • Benefits of Linux Platform • Cost Savings from Mainframe expenses • Improve performance of Odyssey • Strategic Position to run modern ERP (new system) • Ease to enhance system and interface with other products • Bring the college inline with HETG (the consortium) • New Feature for viewing reports

User Impact • Sign on • Icon on desktop (Linux Production) • Sign on will be network id and Password • Processing • All Odyssey screens and command paths remain the same • Function key change for Foot Print (Control Key F2) • Reports • View reports on Odyssey Web • Online Batch Submission: Printer Destination • Local printer – prints at local Odyssey printer • PDFPRT – goes to your email box • Fetch – goes only to web viewer • Other Tasks • Old macros for quick paths will not work • Cut and Paste (control Insert keys and shift insert keys) highlighting text wraps around to beginning of line

User Role • Identify Batch jobs – critical & updates • Review/update port test scripts • Perform Acceptance test • End of term/month processing • Online and batch testing • Print testing: special forms, different locations, online, batch, email • Automatic batch jobs (control M) • Test interfaces

User Communication/ Training • User Group Meetings (Academic, Student, District) • Project Status Meeting with Deans & Support Staff (January) • Email • Executive Committee Members general information email (November) • College–wide email distribution before Linux Icon is installed, general information about the icon and Linux (January) • College–wide email distribution , general information about the icon and Linux (February) • College-wide email distribution, notify Linux system is in Production, instructions on signing on, link to Screen cast (March) • Handout with instructions and screens shots for sign on process and report viewer. • Narrated screen cast for web viewer • Help Desk assistance 7- 2505
