  2. The Internet has lots of good information, but watch out for the sites that will waste your time.

The web address can contain clues: .com (commercial) .org (non-profit organizations) .gov (government A ~ in an address means that .k12 or .edu (education) site is maintained by a person .int (international) rather than a business, .mil (military) organization, or school .net (networks) • The Internet has a lot of information but isn’t very organized. How can you tell if a website has quality information?

Domain names • These domains were added in 2000 .aero (air travel companies) .biz (businesses) .coop (cooperative organizations) .info (information-based services such as newspapers and libraries .museum (museums, archival institutions, exhibitions) .name (individual and personal websites) .pro (professions such as medicine or law)

  5. Website Criteria • Who • What • When • Where • Why

  6. Who? • Who wrote the page? ~Are sources identified and given credit? ~ What are the qualifications of the author? Is there a biography available? ~Can you contact the author? Personal websites are more likely to present opinion rather than fact. Source Proof Authority

  7. What is the purpose of the site? Bias • What is the purpose of the site? • Educate, entertain, persuade, sell… • Is it clear? • Easy to read • Uncluttered • Is it unbiased? • Gender, racial, religious… • Is it easy to use and effective? • Searchable Examples

  11. Phishing and Spoofing • Phishing is tricking people to reveal their personal information, usually with spoofing and a web page. • Spoofing is impersonating someone else on the web. • Spoofed websites can look so much like the real website being spoofed that it’s hard to tell the difference!

  12. Phishing and Spoofing, cont. • Be careful of links in emails. If you are unsure, type the web address into your browser instead of clicking on a link. • Secure sites have a lock graphic and/or use https:// • If you are still unsure, contact the company to find out for sure.
