Updating our Thinking Improving on our good programs with a stronger focus on Pastoral Activities
Brief History • New RCOSAC appointed in 2013 • Tasked with new regional Course of Study • Including a focus on Church Planting • With a strong focus on Activities • We have finished Activities lists, outcomes, course titles and draft syllabi • Almost Ready for Validation • We need help writing modules for the syllabi and preparing materials.
Congregational Focus • From Teaching as the primary pastoral role • To Equipping as the primary pastoral role • Based on Ephesians 4:11-16
Activity • Form into teams of 3 to 5 people • How do you equip the following believers for ministry? What skills, knowledge and spiritual disciplines will help them most to minister in their context? • Farmer • Motorcycle taxi driver • Teacher in a public school • Business person with 10 employees. • Report to the group and have someone record the reports.
Activity Focus • Activity – 15 minutes – Whole group – someone records the observations. • What does a pastor do on a regular basis? • This is not exhaustive but illustrative. • Have the group brainstorm as a whole. • How does this match the needs of the believers we discussed earlier?
Four Engagements • With themselves • With other students • With a local congregation • With the larger non-Christian community • In every class we want the students to engage in these four ways.
Cohort and Mentor • Every student assigned a cohort • Every student assigned a mentor / coach • This should be verified by the educational provider
Outcome Based concepts • Focus on the measurable actions of a student • Using Exit Outcomes to set the broad expectations • Using Activities as the core outcomes for the COS • Designing down to the actions needed at the most basic level to reach the expected exit outcomes. • Using the outcomes as the basis for student evaluation • What and whether a student learns is more important than when and how they learn.
Draft Materials • Currently the materials are in draft form. • There is a temporary website for these materials that we will use until the Regional Website is ready to receive the project • www.equippingforservice.org
Questions and Answers? • What do you think so far? • What are the advantages of using this approach? • What are the disadvantages? • Can every school adopt these concepts?
