Curriculum

1. Curriculum • Sixth grade science is general science meaning we do not focus on just one type of content. We incorporate lessons and units that pertain to earth, life, and physical sciences. The breakdown of the year is as follows: • Quarter 1: • Scientific method • Plant unit- growing a Wisconsin Fast Plant- takes 6 weeks • Quarter 2: • Cells- plant vs animal • Body systems- circulatory, respiratory, muscular/skeletal, digestive, nervous, and immune systems.

2. Curriculum continued… - Quarter 3 • Water Cycle- an add onto fourth grade content • Water unit- the scarcity of water globally and water’s importance on the planet • Atmosphere -Quarter 4: • Oceans • Energy • Scientific contributions

3. Classwork/Homework • Homework is not given nightly, however, students should be reviewing all class material nightly in order to prep for the next day’s lessons and to feel ready for assessments. • Notes will be completed in class and it is the expectation that all students remain engaged and write their own notes as a way to help them learn the material. • All notes and templates given and/or completed in class will also be uploaded onto my personal science page via the Kyrene.org website. (Please see small handout of how to get to my website.) • Students who miss class or lose in class handouts need to visit my website and print off another copy. Please have students talk to me if this is a problem. 

4. Expectations • Accountability- I really strive to instill accountability in all my students to own any shortcomings- missed homework, lost assignment, behavior issue. • Advocate- I encourage my students to speak for themselves and to ask questions and to never leave my class if unsure of their job for the evening. I want them to talk to me and shoot me an email or leave me a note if they feel unsure of the content or aren’t sure of something.

6. AVID Binder Supply List Students must have their CMS AVID agenda at ALL times. If it is lost or severely damaged it will cost $5 to replace.

7. Advisory-We meet once a week for the entire school year and this is your child’s opportunity to be with a smaller group of kids and partake in the following items: • Every Wed Before 1st Period (8:30am-9:15am) • Announcements/Pledge • College Word of the Week • Agenda/Reflection Log • Grade Checks (Every Other Week) • Social and Emotional Skill Building (Second Step) • College Readiness Lessons • Team & Community Building

8. Grading How do I check my student’s grades? *If you can’t access ParentVue, contact Rhonda Mares at (480)541-6403 for assistance. Weighting 80% Assessment –Quizzes, Tests, Essays, Projects 20% Practice – Classwork and Homework

9. CMS Assessment Retake and Corrections Policy *At teacher’s discretion whether a student can retake or make corrections to an assessment (i.e. Open Note Tests/Quizzes are not eligible for a retake but corrections MAY be allowed) *Retake form or other work must be completed by student and signed by parent *Must be completed in a timely manner (within 1-2 weeks of original assessment) ----I will allow students to retake certain tests but tests will be in a different form (usually more complex) and a retake form must be completed prior with parent signature that student has taken steps to prepare and hopefully be more successful. --------

13. Electronics Policy (Personal Electronic Devices) *Includes: Cellphones, tablets, headphones (wired or wireless), etc. Must be TURNED OFF & STORED in students’ backpacks from 8:05am to 3:10pm *Devices visible (hands, pockets, etc.) or heard will be confiscated and sent to Focus Room. Students may pick them up after the last bell of the day. *CMS/Kyrene is not liable for lost or damaged personal property. Please refer to page 24 of the Kyrene Family Handbook for additional information.

The SABERCAT Way- 3PsPREPARED, POLITE & PERFORMING Students will learn, practice and demonstrate how to be Prepared, Polite and Performing at all times and in all areas of the CMS campus as part of our Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS) • ROARs will be awarded to students who demonstrate the 3Ps. In exchange, ROARS are used as school currency in the ROARS store. • A variety of other incentives will be awarded to classes or students who consistently demonstrate the 3 P’s.

16. Dress Code Minimum Requirements • Clothing must cover areas from one armpit to the other and down to approximately 3-4 inches in length on the upper thighs (see image). Tops MUST have shoulder straps that are at least 1” thick. Rips or tears in clothing should be lower than the 3-4 inches in length. • See through or mesh garments must not be worn without appropriate coverage underneath that meet the minimum requirements of the dress code. • Shoes must be worn at all times and should be safe for the school environment (bedroom shoes or slippers should not be worn except for school activities approved by the administration) • Headgear including hats, hoodies and caps are not allowed unless permitted for religious, medical or other reason by administration. • Specialized courses may require specialized attire, such as sports uniforms or safety gear. Administration reserves the right to determine what constitutes appropriate dress. Students who do not adhere to these guidelines will be given alternative appropriate clothing. Parents will be called if appropriate clothing is not available or the students refuses dress code appropriate clothing.

17. Dress Code Additional Requirements • Clothing may not depict, imply, advertise or advocate illegal, violent or lewd conduct, weapons or use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana or other controlled substances. • Clothing may not display or imply vulgar, discriminatory or obscene language or images. • Clothing may not state, imply or depict hate speech or imagery targeting groups based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, religious affiliation or any other protected classification. • Apparel, accessories, tattoos or manners of grooming that by nature of its color, arrangement, trademark or other attribute, denote membership in a gang that advocates illegal or disruptive behavior is prohibited. • Apparel or accessories that endanger student or staff safety may not be worn. • Sunglasses may not be worn inside the building. Administration reserves the right to determine what constitutes appropriate dress. Students who do not adhere to these guidelines will be given alternative appropriate clothing. Parents will be called if appropriate clothing is not available or the students refuses dress code appropriate clothing
