Objectives – by the end of the session you should be able to… • Describe the types of patients who develop GORD and identify their risk factors • Propose an appropriate investigation for each patient presentation • Formulate a management plan for each patient presentation of GORD • List the Upper GI 2WW referral criteria/ RED FLAGS • Recall the risk factors for peptic ulcer disease • Distinguish between the different types of peptic ulcers • Formulate a management plan for the investigation and management of patients with peptic ulcer disease • Summarise the complications of peptic ulcer disease

  4. What is a Peptic Ulcer? • An erosion in the mucosa of the GIT – can penetrate other tissue layers • Gastric Ulcer (5% lifetime risk, 90% lesser curvature) • Duodenal Ulcer (15% lifetime risk) • Other types of ulcers in GIT • Oesophageal ulcer • Stress ulcer
