  2. What you will learn • In this power point I’m hoping to teach you the basics of music. • Some of the things we will be talking about are: • Clefs • Rhythm • Note names • Also looking at an orchestra concert and what a French Horn sounds like

  3. Rhythm • One of the fundamentals of music is rhythm. • Rhythm tell a instrumentalist how long to play a note with the rest of the band. • Some basic note rhythms are: Whole Note Half Note Sixteenth Note Quarter Note Eighth Note

  4. How to count rhythms • In 4/4 time… For a whole note clap on one then hold the clap for the remaining 3 counts 1 2 3 4 For a whole note clap on one hold on two, clap on three then hold on four 1 2 3 4 For a quarter note you will clap on each beat. 1 2 3 4 For an eighth note you will divide the quarter note in half so two eighth equals One quarter note. To count this you say: 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &

  5. Now you try and clap the rhythm 1 2 3 4 1 & 1 1 2 1 1 2 1 2 3 4 How did you do?

  6. Clefs This is called a treble clef. These notes are higher sounding and are played by instruments like Clarinet, flute, Saxophone, Trumpet and French Horn. This is called bass clef. These notes are lower sounding and are played by instruments like the Euphonium, Tuba, Trombone, and any other bass instrument. This is what the clefs look together on piano music. most of the time the treble clef is on the top and bass clef is on the bottom.

  7. How to read Notes Music notes are composed on what is known as a staff. A staff has five lines and four spaces. Music Staff These are the notes names in treble clef that correspond with the appropriate note on the staff. Once you get use to reading notes you can create acronyms to help you remember the order. These are the note names in bass clef that correspond With the appropriate note on the staff.

  8. Now you try to read these Notes How did you do? E C B C F D A G E C A F B C

  9. Instruments • There are many different instruments that help produce music. • These instruments can be broken down into categories: • Brass Instruments • Woodwind Instruments • Strings • Percussion

  10. Brass Family • Brass Instruments make a sound by buzzing into the mouthpiece and using their lips and valves to help them find the pitches • Instruments in this family are: • Trumpet • French Horn • Trombone • Euphonium • Tuba

  11. Woodwind Family • Woodwinds use Reeds that vibrates against the mouthpiece when they blow into the instrument. • Woodwind instruments have lots of keys so they usually play fast, quick notes • Instruments in this family are: • Flute • Clarinet • Saxophone • Oboe • Bassoon

  12. String Instruments • These instruments use a bow and strings to produce the sound. • The bow goes back and forth over a particular string.

  13. Percussion • These instruments are played by striking an object. • The object can either produce a particular note or a sound.

  14. Now you try… This is a game to help you learn what different instruments sound like! www.menc.org/guides/charguid/match/matgame1.htm Your Teacher Ms. Ambrose plays the French Horn. This is a piece with a horn piano! Click the Speaker to play the piece

  15. Music Ensembles • There are many music ensembles some are: • Band • Orchestra • Choir Here’s an orchestra playing the overture to Rhapsody in Blue(Click on Video Below to watch the Orchestra) Here’s a Marching band Click on the picture to the right to Watch the this marching band
