  1. CME At Emory

  2. Background • The Office of Continuing Medical Education (OCME) is responsible for maintaining the School of Medicine’s CME accreditation through the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.

  3. Background (Con’t) In order to maintain our accreditation we must assure that all CME courses certified through our office meet, or exceed, seven Essential Areas determined by the ACCME.

  4. Background (Con’t) Our staff prepares in intricate detail our adherence to these Essentials and are audited every four years in order to be reaccredited. We are up for reaccreditation in July 2007 and are currently preparing our replies and reviewing our course files.

  5. Background (Con’t) Following are the Essential Areas: • Purpose and Mission • Mission • Parent Organization • Educational Planning and Evaluation • Planning Processes • Need Assessment • Purpose and Objectives • Activity Evaluation • Program Evaluation

  6. Background (Con’t) Essential Areas: (Con’t) • Administration • Organizational Framework • Business and Management Practices • Disclosure and Commercial Support Standards • Compliance with ACCME Policies • Program summary • Self Assessment and Improvement Plans • CME Activities • Complete list by type for current accreditation period by date, title, location, hours of instruction, and number of physician and non-physician attendees

  7. Background (Con’t) • We offer full meeting planning services as needed to include: • site location • hotel • banquet and catering contracts • registration • brochure printing and mailing • on-site course management • data base management of all registrants

  8. Background (Con’t) Every registrant is entered in the CME proprietary data base (Sispro) with accompanying course registration and number of CME credits. This data is entered primarily manually; however, we have recently added online registration for certain courses. All data is maintained since September 1996. CME is the official repository of all registrants and their category 1 credits toward the AMA Physicians Recognition Award. The new data base management system, which is currently in the testing stage, will allow online registration data to feed directly into the data base reducing the amount of manual data entry dramatically. In addition, each registrant will have a login ID and password, to be able to print their personal CME credit transcript, or certificates, as needed and manage their personal information online.

  9. Background (Con’t) • Our staff handles all accounts payable and accounts receivable for courses including: • paying all course invoices • honoria • reimbursement for travel expenses (both domestic and international) • credit card payment processing • online registration payment processing

  10. Background (Con’t) • We are fee for service • 10% of course revenue for standard courses • flat fee for jointly sponsored courses All necessary information for Course Directors, guidelines and required forms are available on our website www.emory.edu/CME.

  11. Facts and Figures • Grand Rounds certified by OCME • (All data is not yet available for FY 06)

  12. Facts and Figures (Con’t) • Standard Courses certified by OCME • (All data is not yet available for FY 06)

  13. Facts and Figures (Con’t) • Course Revenue

  14. Facts and Figures (Con’t) • Course Expenses

  15. Facts and Figures (Con’t) • Net Income Returned to Departments

  16. Statistical Analysis • Admin Fee as Percent of Expenses

  17. Statistical Analysis (Con’t) • Admin Fee as Percent of Revenue • Jointly sponsored courses are charged a flat fee, which may be more or less than the standard 10%, which causes the average percent to be more than 10%

  18. Statistical Analysis (Con’t) • Total Expenses as Percent of Total Revenue • All FY 06 figures are inconclusive since we have not reached the year-end close

  19. Conclusion • When Emory University School of Medicine presents CME courses, we want to be professional. Using certified meeting planners in the OCME provides this professionalism in a cost effective manner. Similar outside meeting planning companies are available for a considerably higher cost and would not be able to provide CME credits. These numbers indicate that OCME provides value at a minimal cost.
