Christian Methodist Episcopal - CME • In 1844 the Methodist Church was split on the issue of slavery with the Northern states against slavery and the Southern states for it. • The blacks wanted autonomy and the whites wanted blacks to leave. • As a result the Methodist Episcopal Church South in 1866 at their General Conference honored the petitions of the blacks to withdraw.

  3. CME move • In 1870 the third African American Methodist denomination was founded. • It was call “Colored Methodist Episcopal Church in America.” http://docsouth.unc.edu/church/phillips/phillips.html

  4. It was founded by bishops William H. Miles and Richard H. Vanderhorst. • In 1954 they changed their name from “Colored” to “Christian.” http://docsouth.unc.edu/church/phillips/phill199.jpg
