  1. Parallelism Staying in line

  2. Rule #132 • Ideas within a series must remain in parallel form. • Two or more equivalent ideas in a sentence that have the same purpose should be presented in the same form. • Whenever expressing a series of ideas or actions, make sure that they are written in parallel form.

  3. Not Parallel My roommate is miserly, sloppy, and a bore. My vacuum cleaner squealed loudly, shook violently, and dust filled the air. We soon discovered that our plane tickets were invalid, that our cruise reservations had never been made, and our travel agent left town. Parallel My roommate is miserly, sloppy, and boring. My roommate is a miser, a slob, and a bore. My vacuum cleaner squealed loudly, shook violently, and filled the air with dust. We soon discovered that our plane tickets were invalid, that out cruise reservations had never been made, and that our travel agent had left town. What it Looks Like

  4. Practice: re-write each sentence so that it demonstrates parallel structure. • The kids told the baby-sitter that they loved baking cookies, watching TV, and to stay up late. • She danced gracefully and with lightness. • Johanna read the book, summarized its contents, and submitting it to the teacher. • When Eileen came home from school, she loved to go running, to shower, and doing her homework before dinner. • Whenever I go camping, I really enjoy swimming, to hike, and cooking over the campfire.

  5. Continued… • Steve wants to hike the Swiss Alps, ski down the Matterhorn, and riding bike around Europe. • Many high school students are busy because they attend school, hold part-time jobs, and homework must be done. • The enclosed resume indicates that I am interested in writing, editing, and I like to read. • The kids decided that for their Halloween party they would bob for apples, go trick-or-treating, and scaring the other neighborhood kids. • When reading the paper, I enjoy perusing the comic, glancing at Dear Abby, and skip the sports.
