  2. Going out • A record 40 British organisations took part in China Tourism Mission 2012 - the largest ever delegation of UK tourism businesses to have gone to China • Nine newcomers including The View from The Shard, Arsenal Football Club, John Lewis

  4. Why China • China’s growth - thirty years average 10% • 2nd largest economy • 2011 - 9.6% • 2012 – around 8.2 % • By 2015 China is predicted to become the world’s largest consumer market

Why China • China’s growth • Thirty years average 10% • 2nd largest economy • 2010 10.3% • 2011 9.6% • world’s largest exporter • We imported £28.2 billion worth of goods in 2010 • But China is also the world’s third largest importer • In fact Imports for 1st 3 months of ‘11 rose 32.6% to record high of $400.66 bn outstripping exports and pushing china into trade deficit for the first time since ‘04

  6. Driving factors • Rising amount of international travel the Chinese are taking – 70 million outbound trips in 2011, to reach 100 mln by 2020 • Higher incomes • The greater ease with which they obtain visas • The appreciation of the RMB

  7. 财神The God of Wealth • Over a million millionaires in US$ terms • Known US$ billionaires: 189 (actual more like 500 – more than anywhere else in world) • 300 million middle class • 65 million households US$15,000

  8. China spending allure • By 2020 China's total retail sales will reach $10 trillion, a size similar to the current market of the euro zone.

  9. E-commerce giant • Recently witnessed the world’s largest online shopping spree on Nov.11 when Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba reported sales of £1.9 billion

  10. The sun shines brighter in the East • Financial confidence of Chinese consumers remains high • Among wealthy Americans only 46% express confidence in the future rise of their incomes • In China 74% believe their incomes will rise in the next 5 years

  11. The Spill Over • About half of Chinese luxury spending currently takes place abroad (McKinsey) • Journeys taken abroad are becoming one of the most popular leisure activities

  12. China’s wealth • Income levels do not necessarily match social classes • Demand for travel and luxury in a state of flux across income levels and social classes • Red princelings(红二代), offspring of government officials (官二代) and children of private businessmen (富二代)are all big spenders

  13. The Mushrooming Middle Class • 300 million and growing • Spread across the country – in first-tier cities in the eastern seaboard but also in the up and coming second and third-tier cities • Annual household disposable income between £5000 and £25000

  14. The Affluent • At 120 million strong and with $590 billion of spending power • Sophistication is the new buzz word

  15. The super rich • Households with liquid assets in excess of £10 million • Wealth is manifested by a certain lifestyle and aspirations. • Expectations of individualised and VIP treatment
