First Grade CurriculumReading • Houghton Mifflin Reading Series: Incorporates phonics and reading strategies (listen to story on wikispace) • Centers: Participate in independent learning activities that reinforce skills across the curriculum • Guided Reading: Small groups based on similar strengths/needs. Flexible as skills develop • (Comprehension Example #1)

  5. First Grade CurriculumReading Example #1 - Comprehension • Read the article carefully • What is it about? • Laundry!!!!!  • Comprehension is key! • Just because you are proficient in reading, doesn’t mean you have mastered comprehension! 

  7. First Grade CurriculumWriting Example #2 Guess&Go/Decoding • What does it mean????? • Can you say this word????? • Didaskaleinophobia • Fear of school • This is a perfect example of stretching out words and “guess and go!” 

First Grade CurriculumWriting • Spelling Connections (pg. 10): Spelling/handwriting program that develops sound-symbol awareness, teaches spelling patterns and word families, and supports sight word vocabulary development • Encourage “GUESS AND GO” spelling (helps develop skills, stretch out words, makes them become conventional spellers) • “Tools” to help with writing: nametag, word wall, posters • Homework Monday, pretest Monday, test Friday

  17. General InformationHomework • 10 minutes/night – district policy • Check blue folder each night • Math homework in yellow booklet (only complete page that is dated)

  18. General InformationThursday Folders • Every Thursday a white folder will come home w/important notices/papers • Empty contents, sign, and return Friday • Return any papers in the BLUE homework folder, NOT the Thursday folder.

General InformationReading Envelope • Some students will bring home a brown envelope containing a book • Ask your child to read the book to you • Repeated readings boost your child’s self-confidence as well as improve sight word vocab, fluency, and comprehension. • Sign enclosed sheet and return next day

  20. General InformationEnrichment/Extra Support Assignments • When appropriate, I will send home either an optional enrichment activity or practice assignments

  21. General InformationImportant Reminders • Students must have a note stating any transportation changes • Please send in an excuse note w/your child after an absence • Please remember to give your child a snack each day (lunchtime is 12:45) • Feel free to send a b.day treat (22 kids)

Classroom Discipline Policy Individual Behavior Plan • 1st warning = name on board w/a check • 2nd warning = 2nd check next to name • 3rd warning = fish out of the bowl and red note home to be signed and returned the following school day • Improvement = fish back in the bowl • Fish in bowl at end of day = star on incentive chart in blue homework folder • See examples!

Classroom Discipline PolicyRewards and Behavior Incentives • Once incentive chart in blue folder is complete, students choose prize • Lonny the Lobster’s Friend (see previous examples) • Table groups earn stars for lunch w/teacher • Kutz Kudo drawing in office each Friday • Weekly goal met to earn free time Friday
