  3. Satellite based navigation system • 24 satellites put into orbit by US Dept of Defense • Originally for military use • Opened to Civilian use in 1980’s • No subscription fees or setup charges to use GPS – What is it?

  4. 24 Satellites • 12,000 miles above us • Traveling at about 7,000 miles per hour • 2 orbits per 24 hours • Solar powered • First launched in 1978, constellation complete in 1994 GPS – Satellite System

GPS Receiver uses “triangulation” to calculate its exact position • The receiver calculates the time (and thus distance) that it takes to receive a signal from a satellite • By using three satellites the receiver can calculate its 2D position (longitude and latitude) and plot it on an electronic map • By using four satellites a 3D position (longitude, latitude, and altitude). GPS – How does it work?
