  1. 1 Should Accountants Use Online Coaching? When you are supposed to be the font of all knowledge? In this article we look at a new development in this post-covid world that is designed to do just that – give accountants someone to turn to in their own business without devaluing their own role. Quite the opposite in fact, by raising their value and performance. Accountants shouldn’t use coaching on themselves, should they? We’re the people who are supposed to have all the answers. Everyone else turns to us. We don’t mind bringing in experts in other fields when it comes to supplementing our client services but surely, it’s a weakness to turn to online coaching for accountants themselves? We’re going to get caught out, exposed as frauds, right? https://www.progressbb.co.uk

  2. 2 Wrong! Think about your own client relationships for a start. Clients don’t turn to you for advice to make them better plumbers, engineers, designers, chefs or whatever it is that they do. That’s the realm of their own technical training and development. They turn to you because: You have expertise they can benefit from You have a different perspective You have a wider view of the world outside of their four walls You understand them and their challenges You are a safe and independent person to turn to You are trusted and honest, you tell them how it is You make them think You drive them to act The digitalization of our world has brought many benefits to businesses with speed of process, access to information and wider market places creating great opportunities and efficiencies. The downside is that the pace of change, the complexities of technology and the increased competition have significantly added to the challenges of running your own business and accountants running their own firms are not immune to that. Add the economic pressures of a post-covid world and running your own firm can be a permanent headache. Accountants have their professional bodies to turn to but having someone who understands your world and can sit there as a hidden and supportive partner for you has huge value. Someone to turn to. Someone who respects that it’s your firm with your values and vision but who can facilitate, challenge and guide your efforts and thinking. Another set of eyes and ears. Mentoring face to face isn’t for everyone though. It can be above your budget and it may not be practical for you or the accounting mentor. 2020 has shown that services that were previously viewed as face to face critical can be delivered just as well online and often more effectively. The development of online mentoring programmes for accountants falls very much into this category. As well as being more flexible, cost-effective and not limited by geography or time zones, they offer the accountant the chance to move at their own pace but with the benefits of still having a mentor to drive and support them. https://www.progressbb.co.uk

  3. 3 Running an accounting firm today means focusing on three key areas that are the cornerstones of any modern business: Leadership & vision Team and production Client experience and brand An online coaching programme for accountants should enable hard pressed professionals to work through strategies for improving their performance in these areas. As with your clients, the technical development is left to the professional CPD. Instead, the mentoring programmes can focus on personal, team and business performance, driving you and those around you with greater clarity and energy and in a more systemized and efficient manner. The problem with technical CPD is that it ticks the vital competence box but does little for some really fundamental areas: happiness, satisfaction, pride, reward. Most accountants I know didn’t start their firms for the financial reward. Yes, we all have bills to pay and aim for a lifestyle for our family but the driver in so many cases is a desire to make a difference, to create positive change for their clients, teams, communities and families. Mentoring is such a critical tool in achieving these more emotive goals and the development of online mentoring and coaching programmes specifically for accountants opens up the resource to many more in need, no matter how small your firm and no matter how pressed you are for time and money. Online mentoring can help you break the cycle. Source: https://articles.abilogic.com/466037/should-accountants-use-online-coaching.html https://www.progressbb.co.uk
