REFRIGERANT GASES AND ITS TYPES R22 is commonly known as Freon and has been used for decades as the coolant in a central air conditioning system. Previously, most refrigerants used to release CFCs (or chlorofluorocarbons), which were involved in ozone layer depletion. The use of HFC gas (hydrofluorocarbon) was implemented into the world of refrigeration in the 1990s, in order to replace the other gases which were detrimental for the ozone layer (CFCs or HCFCs). HCFCs replaced chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) coolants in many applications, but are now being phased out in the U.S. and cannot be manufactured any longer. HCFCs are a popular choice among refrigeration
manufacturers as they are a suitable substitute substance for CFCs and they do not deplete the ozone quite as much as either CFCs or HCFCs. Hydrocarbon coolants involve other chemical compounds, like propane and isobutane, that may be used in some systems in a similar manner to R12 and the other coolants. R744s carbon dioxide is one of the most widely used coolants in home heat pumps and air-conditioning systems, but it may cause ozone depletion if it is leaked. R-134A is considered to be more than adequate as an alternative for R-22, a commonly used hydrochlorofluorocarbon refrigerant, because it has higher refrigeration pressures and capacities, which lead to better efficiency.
