  5. WhattheTreatyEntailed? •  General Clauses • The establishment of the League of Nations • War Guilt clause - Germany to accept blame for starting the war. • Financial Clauses • Reparations - Germany was to pay for the damage caused by the war. (£6,600 million)

  6. WhattheTreatyEntailed? • Military Clauses • Army - reduced to 100,000 men, no tanks allowed • Navy - allowed 6 ships, no submarines • Air force– no air force • Rhineland – no German military personnel and weapons allowed

  8. CanadianSacrificeandDemands • Sir Robert Borden insisted Canada have the same representation as other small countries at the Conference • Canada was granted two seats at the conference

  9. CouldCanadasigntheTreaty? • Borden: insisted Canada sign Treaty separately • This was granted, despite opposition from the United States with the condition that Canada signed under the umbrella of Great Britain.

OutcomeofSigningtheTreatyfor Canada • The outcome of signing the Treaty: • Canada obtained separate representation in the Assembly of the League of Nations • Obtained the recognition to have representative elected to the Council of the League • Canada was actually elected to the Council of the League in 1927

  12. OutcomeoftheTreatyforFutureGenerations • The Treaty of Versailles is a direct cause of WWII • Germany was devastated, politically, economically, socially • Men like Hitler blamed the Government (whom was mostly Jewish) for disgracing the German name
