Pattern of the Hard- Boiled Introduction to the Hard Boiled Style
The Formula • Classical detective stories focus less on apprehension and more on explanation • Hard-boiled ends with the detective/criminal confrontation • Personal involvement of the detective on a moral & emotional level • The detective is forced to define his own concept of morality and justice • Frequently in contrast with the police (too corrupt to hand out proper judgment)
So Confusing! • The initial mission = smoke screen for another more devious plot • Supposed victim = villain • Lover = murderess • Faithful friend = rotten betrayer • The police, DA, and often the client try to halt the investigation • Seemingly respectable/successful people = members of a gang
Pattern of Action • The detective is called to investigate a seemingly simple case • His investigation comes up against a web of conspiracy that reflects the presence of a hidden criminal organization • The track leads back to the rich and respectable levels of society and exposes the corrupt relationship between the pillars of community and the criminal underground.
